Tiger Island ⭐ – BBC One, 7:15pm

This is the one to clear the sofa for. Tiger Island is a two-part natural-history film set on a small river island in western Nepal, where an extraordinary local conservation effort has seen tiger numbers climb to one of the highest concentrations anywhere on Earth. The result is several adult tigers, including mothers with cubs, sharing just a few square kilometres.

Tonight follows two mothers, Goma and Mala, as they raise their young, and the team, led by cinematographer Anna Dimitriadis and big-cat scientist Dan O’Neill, use new drone technology and remote cameras to film the animals from angles that simply weren’t possible before. The footage is genuinely jaw-dropping, and with a male tiger arriving on the island, there’s real tension to go with the spectacle. Both episodes are on BBC iPlayer. Easily the pick of the night.

Antiques Roadshow – BBC One, 8:15pm

Even if you usually leave the room when the valuations start, this sport-themed special is worth a look. Fiona Bruce takes the show to Lord’s and Wimbledon, where gold-medal Olympians share their stories and some remarkable relics turn up, among them Nobby Stiles’s 1966 World Cup shirt and the oldest known written rules of cricket, dating back to 1727. A genuinely uncomfortable, very well-made piece of true crime. It tells the story of Believe in Magic, a charity set up to grant wishes to seriously ill children, founded by teenager Megan Bhari and her mother Jean O’Brien. Celebrities and pop stars lined up to support it. The trouble, as the series carefully lays out, is that almost none of it was what it seemed, and the unravelling is as sad as it is shocking. Tip Toe – Channel 4, 9pm

Russell T Davies’ Canal Street thriller reaches its halfway point, and tonight it changes perspective. Recent events are replayed from the point of view of Clive (David Morrissey), the neighbour whose friendship with bar owner Leo (Alan Cumming) has been curdling all series. Seeing things from Clive’s side doesn’t make him more sympathetic so much as more unsettling, and his son George is increasingly caught in the middle. Davies keeps ratcheting up the unease, and Morrissey is excellent. Channel 4 streaming.

Death Valley – BBC One, 9:15pm

Timothy Spall is clearly having the time of his life in this Welsh crime comedy, playing John Chapel, a retired actor best known for a long-running TV detective who now finds himself solving real murders alongside the socially awkward DS Janie Mallowan (Gwyneth Keyworth). The second series has loosened up and found its rhythm. Tonight a death inside a new-age commune brings back Janie’s estranged father Michael (Owen Teale), who walked out on the family years ago, giving Keyworth some properly affecting material alongside the gentle comedy. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? – ITV1, 9pm

Jeremy Clarkson is back in the famous chair, putting another batch of contestants through the wringer in search of the jackpot. Clarkson has grown into the role nicely, all mock-impatience and genuine tension, and the format remains as watchable as ever. ITVX.

The topical panel show returns for a run of summer specials.
