Series 4 opens primetime with another coastal community profile, episode 6, continuing the strand’s usual mix of local history and shoreline life.

Half an hour later it’s the waterways travelogue Canal Boat Diaries, series 4 episode 4, one of BBC Four’s more dependable early-evening fixtures.

Vasa: The Ghost Ship — BBC Four, 8pm

An hour-long documentary on the Vasa, the Swedish warship that sank within minutes of setting off on its maiden voyage from Stockholm in the 17th century and was recovered largely intact centuries later. It’s a factual film, not a dramatisation.

Jaws — BBC Four, 9pm

Steven Spielberg’s Jaws (1975) takes the 9pm slot. The shark thriller that more or less invented the summer blockbuster still holds up, and Roy Scheider’s police chief still gets a rougher night than any small coastal town deserves.

Talking Pictures: Jaws — BBC Four, 11pm

A 45-minute archive documentary about the making of the film, narrated by Celia Imrie, fills the hour before the sequel. It’s a companion piece rather than a rerun of the main event, so don’t mistake it for the film itself.

Jaws 2 — BBC Four, 11:45pm

The 1978 sequel closes the night. Jeannot Szwarc directs this time rather than Spielberg, and Amity Island gets a second visit from a great white that its holiday season really doesn’t need.
