What’s on Legend today

Overnight is two action thrillers back to back. Stratton opens at 1:20am, the 2017 adaptation of Duncan Falconer’s novels in which Dominic Cooper’s Special Boat Service commando hunts down a terrorist cell, with Gemma Chan, Tom Felton and Thomas Kretschmann in support. Assault on Station 33, also released as Assault on VA-33, follows at 3:15am: a 2021 siege thriller in which Sean Patrick Flanery’s PTSD-suffering veteran becomes the last line of defence when armed insurgents take a Veterans Affairs hospital hostage. Legend goes off air just after 5am and stays dark until 5:30am, then runs teleshopping until programmes resume at 7am.

The Six Million Dollar Man carries the channel from 7am to midday, five episodes back to back from series 5, with the last three numbered episodes 17 to 19. Two airings of The Gambler V: Playing For Keeps follow from midday, the 1994 TV western that reunites Kenny Rogers as Brady Hawkes alongside Bruce Boxleitner and Mariska Hargitay.

The afternoon’s one film is Charro! at 3:35pm, Elvis Presley’s only bearded, non-singing role, a 1969 western with Presley as a reformed gunslinger dragged back into his old gang’s plans to sack a small border town. Bite The Bullet — Legend, 5:30pm

Richard Brooks’s 1975 western opens the evening at 5:30pm and doesn’t let go until 8pm. Gene Hackman and James Coburn lead a field of riders competing in a gruelling 700-mile cross-country horse race for a $2,000 prize, with Candice Bergen, Ben Johnson and Jan-Michael Vincent among the other entrants, and the real contest as much about old grudges as it is about the finish line.

The Twilight Zone — Legend, 8pm

Cavender Is Coming, one of the original series’ few outright comic episodes, opens the double bill at 8pm. Carol Burnett plays accident-prone usherette Agnes Grep, and Jesse White is the bungling guardian angel given 24 hours to sort her life out before he loses his own wings for good.

The Twilight Zone — Legend, 8:30pm

The Changing of the Guard closes out series three at 8:30pm. Donald Pleasence, heavily aged with make-up for the role, plays a schoolteacher forced into retirement after fifty-one years, who is shown by the ghosts of former pupils exactly what his career amounted to.

Driven — Legend, 9pm

Sylvester Stallone’s 2001 racing drama takes the 9pm slot. Stallone plays a washed-up former champion brought back by team owner Burt Reynolds to mentor Kip Pardue’s talented but reckless rookie through a title-deciding season.

Rambo — Legend, 11:25pm

Stallone returns as John Rambo at 11:25pm in the 2008 sequel. Hired to guide a group of missionaries into war-torn Burma, Rambo ends up leading a band of mercenaries back in to pull them out after the mission goes wrong — the bluntest and bloodiest entry in the series.

Horror hasn’t been dropped, just demoted. Amicus and Hammer-adjacent anthologies still turn up, along with independent chillers and oddities like Horror Express, though these days they land in the afternoon or after midnight rather than at 9pm.

Sci-fi, fantasy and action films

Most evenings belong to genre cinema of a specific vintage: Van Damme, Steven Seagal, Dolph Lundgren, and further back, the fantasy adventures Ray Harryhausen animated. Film4 has the recent theatrical releases covered. Legend is working two or three decades earlier, and there is less competition for that ground than you would think.
