Is EastEnders on tonight?
EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One. There is no Friday, Saturday or Sunday episode.
That single fact answers most of the searches that bring people here. If you are asking on a Friday night, the soap is not on, and nothing has gone wrong — the BBC moved EastEnders to a four-night week and dropped the Friday episode. The four episodes now run Monday through Thursday, half an hour each, from 7.30pm to 8pm.
All four episodes for the week also land together on BBC iPlayer at 6am on Monday, which is the quickest route if you would rather not wait for broadcast.
Why is EastEnders not on tonight?
Two reasons account for nearly every case:
- It is a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. There is no episode on those nights, ever.
- Something displaced it. BBC One drops the soap for live football, a major news event or a one-off broadcast. This is the only genuinely unpredictable cause.
Why are there two EastEnders tonight?
Because an episode was displaced earlier in the week. Rather than lose it, the BBC doubles up — two episodes back to back, usually 7.30pm to 8.30pm. A double bill is a sign that a night was lost, not that an extra episode was added.
When are Coronation Street and Emmerdale on?
Both are on ITV1 and both currently run six nights a week, Sunday to Friday, with no Saturday episode:

They air back to back, Emmerdale first, then Coronation Street — both pages carry tonight’s exact time, rebuilt each morning from the broadcast schedule. ITV has reshuffled both soaps more than once in recent years — hour-long episodes on fewer nights, then back again — so treat the pattern above as the current arrangement rather than a permanent fixture. On a night with live football, ITV moves both rather than dropping them.
Is Hollyoaks on tonight?
Hollyoaks is the odd one out, and the arrangement confuses people. The new episode goes out on E4 at 7pm on weekdays. The two episodes E4 shows at 6am and 6.30am the same morning are the previous days’ episodes, not that night’s — on 22 September the morning pair were episodes 111 and 112 and the 7pm was 113. Channel 4 carries an omnibus at the weekend.

When is Casualty on?
Casualty airs on Saturday evenings on BBC One, usually starting around 8pm and running for roughly 50 minutes.
The important caveat is that it does not run all year. Casualty goes out in series blocks with gaps of several weeks between them, which is why “what time is Casualty on tonight” so often has the answer “it isn’t”. When it is between series, the Saturday slot goes to something else entirely.

When is Gogglebox on?
New episodes are on Channel 4 on Friday evenings during a series.
The confusion comes from E4, which repeats Gogglebox most nights of the week at around 10pm, often two episodes back to back. So the show appears in the listings almost daily while genuinely new episodes only arrive once a week. If you want the new one, it is Channel 4 on Friday; anything on E4 is a repeat.
The rest, briefly
- The Chase — ITV1 weekday teatimes, 5pm to 6pm. Celebrity specials move to a later slot, usually around 6.30pm.
- Vera — ITV3 runs repeats regularly, typically a two-hour slot from 8pm midweek and later at weekends. New series air on ITV1.
- Antiques Roadshow — BBC One on Sunday evenings, usually 8pm.
Why do these times keep moving?
Three things move a fixed slot, and it is nearly always one of them:
- Live sport. Football is the single biggest cause of soap disruption on both BBC One and ITV1.
- One-off events. State occasions, elections and breaking news take priority.
- Series breaks. Casualty, Gogglebox and most returning dramas run in blocks, not continuously.
