What’s on BBC One Today — The Daytime Schedule

Tuesday’s daytime runs the standard weekday shape. Breakfast opens at 6am and holds the sofa until 9:30am, when Animal Park takes over, followed by The Moment of Proof at 10:15am and Expert Witness at 10:45am. Homes Under the Hammer fills the late morning from 11:15am, and Bargain Hunt runs through to the BBC News at One.

After lunch it’s factual and lifestyle programming: Policing Paradise at 2pm, Rick Stein’s Australia at 2:30pm, then Escape to the Country at 3pm. The teatime hour belongs to auction and bargain-hunting formats: The Bidding Room takes 3:45pm and The Travelling Auctioneers follows at 4:30pm, before Pointless closes out the afternoon at 5:15pm ahead of the evening news.

BBC One Tonight — Primetime and the Evening Schedule

Here’s the BBC One primetime line-up for tonight, Tuesday 21 July 2026.

BBC News — BBC One, 6pm

The evening news bulletin, followed by local weather.

BBC London News — BBC One, 6:30pm

Regional news and weather for the London area; viewers elsewhere get their own local opt-out.

Our Lives: Principal Ballerina — BBC One, 7pm

This documentary strand profiles people in unusual or demanding jobs, and tonight’s edition (series 9, episode 2) follows a principal ballerina through the physical and mental toll of life at the top of a dance company.

EastEnders — BBC One, 7:30pm

Walford’s second instalment of the week. EastEnders has held its 7:30pm slot since the Friday episode was dropped in 2022, and tonight’s episode carries straight on from Monday’s storylines.

The Great British Sewing Bee — BBC One, 8pm

Only two episodes into series 12, the remaining contestants tackle another pattern challenge and transformation task under Patrick Grant and Esme Young’s judging.

Murder 24/7 — BBC One, 9pm

Murder 24/7 returns for a third series tonight, and it’s the strongest slot of the evening. The documentary strand follows West Mercia Police detectives in real time as they investigate a suspicious death in Worcestershire, opening with the question that gives the episode its title: was it murder or suicide? DCI Leighton Harding leads the inquiry across this and the following episode.

BBC News and Weather — BBC One, 10pm

The late bulletin, with a fuller weather forecast than the 6pm slot.

BBC London News — BBC One, 10:30pm

A short regional update ahead of the night’s film.

Harriet — BBC One, 10:45pm

Cynthia Erivo earned an Oscar nomination for her lead performance in this 2019 biographical drama, which follows Harriet Tubman’s escape from slavery and her return, again and again, to lead others to freedom. A solid pick for anyone staying up past the news.

Popular Shows on BBC One

Soaps

EastEnders is the big one: four episodes a week, 7:30pm, Monday to Thursday. It has been running since 1985, it’s set in the fictional East London borough of Walford, and it remains one of the highest-rated programmes on UK television. On BBC iPlayer, episodes go up at 6am on broadcast day, which means a significant chunk of the audience watches before the evening transmission.

Entertainment and Quizzes

Pointless is the cleverest of the BBC’s teatime quizzes. The premise, find the answers a survey group didn’t think of and score as low as you can, rewards obscure knowledge over fast buzzer fingers, and Alexander Armstrong has fronted it since 2009.

The Apprentice returns each autumn; Lord Sugar’s boardroom firings are the draw, even when the business tasks themselves are nonsense. Strictly Come Dancing lands in September and runs to December, and for twelve weeks it owns Saturday nights.

Blankety Blank, revived with Bradley Walsh, fills lighter entertainment slots, and Celebrity Bridge of Lies with Ross Kemp has settled into the Saturday teatime schedule.

Drama

BBC One drama covers a wide range of territory. On the lighter end, Death in Paradise is the channel’s most consistent Sunday-night drama, a Caribbean murder procedural that runs the same formula every week and never pretends otherwise. Casualty has held the Saturday 8pm emergency medicine drama slot for longer than most viewers can remember, and it continues to attract strong audiences.

For newer drama, BBC One tends to commission limited series for the 9pm or 10pm slot, usually three to six episodes, often with a recognisable lead. These rotate through the year.

Sport

BBC One carries Match of the Day on Saturday nights, the most-watched football highlights programme in the UK. The channel also broadcasts major international football tournaments, Wimbledon (shared with BBC Two), and the FA Cup. Sports Personality of the Year is the BBC’s flagship sporting occasion each December.

Factual and News

Panorama remains the BBC’s flagship current affairs documentary strand. Countryfile runs on Sunday evenings, and the Sunday-night schedule also tends to include a wildlife or nature documentary, particularly around major BBC Natural History Unit productions. Antiques Roadshow holds the 8pm Sunday slot and continues to pull in large, multigenerational audiences.

How to Watch BBC One Live and on Demand

Channel Numbers

Here’s where to find BBC One depending on your platform:

Platform Channel Number
Freeview (SD) 1
Freeview HD 101
Sky (Q, Stream, Glass) 101
Virgin Media 101
Freesat 101
Freely 1

BBC One is free-to-air on all of these platforms, with no subscription required. The regional version you receive is determined by your postcode.

BBC iPlayer

BBC One streams live and free on BBC iPlayer at bbc.co.uk/iplayer, and via the iPlayer app on smart TVs, iOS, Android, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, and most streaming sticks. You need a free BBC account and a valid TV Licence to watch live or to stream programmes on the day of broadcast. Catch-up content available after the broadcast day is also covered by the licence.

Most BBC One programmes are available on iPlayer for 30 days after transmission. EastEnders episodes sometimes remain available for longer given the volume of output.

Freely

BBC One is available on the Freely platform, the free streaming service set up jointly by the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 for broadband-connected televisions. If you have a Freely-enabled smart TV, BBC One is on channel 1.

Do You Need a TV Licence?

Yes. Watching BBC One live, whether via aerial, satellite, cable or online stream, requires a valid TV Licence. So does watching iPlayer content on the day of broadcast. As of April 2026 a colour TV Licence costs £180 per year, and that fee is the channel’s only funding source, which is why there are no adverts.

BBC One Regional Variations and the Nations

BBC One isn’t one uniform national channel. It splits into regional and national opt-outs that replace network content with local programmes.

In England, regional news programmes such as BBC North West Tonight, BBC London, Look North and their equivalents air in the 6:30pm slot after the BBC News at Six, and during other daytime windows. These are produced from regional BBC centres around the country.

For the devolved nations, there are fully distinct national channels that share much of the BBC One network schedule but have their own opt-outs:

  • BBC One Scotland carries Scottish news and programming including specific sports coverage and Scottish-made drama and entertainment.
  • BBC One Wales (or BBC Wales) has its own news output, Welsh-language windows and regional content, and carries the Wales Today news programme.
  • BBC One Northern Ireland airs its own news and regional programming, with BBC Newsline as its main evening news bulletin.

All regional and national variants are available via BBC iPlayer. If you’re watching on satellite or cable, the version you receive is tied to your registered postcode.

BBC One HD is available on all the main platforms (Freeview 101, Sky 101, Virgin 101, Freesat 101) and is the default for most viewers who have an HD set. There’s no separate BBC One +1 channel.

Tonight’s instalment is the second of the week, continuing straight on from Monday’s episode. During Wimbledon fortnight the Monday-to-Thursday episodes sometimes shift over to BBC Two if the tennis runs long into the evening. Every episode lands on BBC iPlayer from 6am on the day of broadcast, so there’s no need to wait for the evening slot at all.

What’s on BBC One tonight?

Tuesday 21 July 2026 keeps the weekday schedule running: EastEnders at 7:30pm, The Great British Sewing Bee at 8pm, and then the return of Murder 24/7 for a new series at 9pm. After the 10pm news, BBC One shows the 2019 drama Harriet, with Cynthia Erivo as Harriet Tubman.

Does BBC One have adverts?

No. BBC One carries no commercial advertising on any platform, and neither does any other BBC channel. The BBC is funded entirely by the TV Licence fee. You will never see a commercial break on BBC One, whether watching live, on iPlayer, or via any other stream.

Can I watch BBC One online without a TV aerial?

Yes. BBC One streams live on BBC iPlayer and on the Freely platform for broadband-connected TVs. You don’t need a TV aerial or a satellite dish, just a broadband connection, a free BBC account, and a valid TV Licence. The iPlayer app is available on smart TVs, phones, tablets, Amazon Fire TV, Roku and most major streaming devices.

Verdict

Tonight belongs to Murder 24/7. The real-time policing documentary returns for a third series at 9pm, and a strong opening case involving West Mercia Police is a good reason to build the evening around it.

Earlier on, EastEnders continues its midweek run at 7:30pm and The Great British Sewing Bee follows at 8pm. Anyone still up after the 10pm news gets Harriet, Cynthia Erivo’s Oscar-nominated turn as Harriet Tubman, to close out the night.
