What you cannot watch free

Most live football in the UK is behind a paywall, and no aerial or Freeview box changes that. Premier League rights sit with Sky Sports and TNT Sports; the Champions League is on TNT Sports and Amazon Prime Video; the EFL is largely Sky Sports, with ITV showing selected matches.

What is protected by law is narrower than most people expect. The listed events that must be available free-to-air include the FA Cup final, the World Cup and European Championship finals tournaments, and the Scottish FA Cup final in Scotland. League football is not on that list.

So the honest summary: you can follow tournaments, cup finals and highlights for nothing, and watch a steady trickle of live matches on ITV and the BBC. You cannot follow a Premier League club week to week without paying.
