What’s on E4 today

The overnight run opens with First Dates at 12:15am, then three back-to-back episodes of Below Deck Mediterranean carry through to 3:45am and five of Brooklyn Nine-Nine take the graveyard shift to 5:25am. The Hollyoaks Omnibus sits at 6am, running an hour and ten minutes and rounding up the week’s episodes rather than delivering a new one — Sunday is the one day the first-look slot doesn’t apply. Modern Family and three episodes of Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares USA fill the rest of the breakfast and morning schedule.

The Simpsons gets a much shorter outing than it sometimes does on E4: four episodes run from 10:40am to 12:15pm and that’s it for the day. Antz takes the early afternoon slot from 12:45pm, followed by Home Alone from 2:25pm. Cruising Paradise: Above & Below Deck, a spin-off strand from the Below Deck franchise, airs at 4:35pm — the on-screen billing calls it a new series while numbering it as the fourth episode, so treat it as an established run rather than a launch. Lego Masters Australia arrives at 5:35pm to open the evening proper.

E4’s Sunday evening is unusually compact: just four programmes carry the whole 5:35pm-to-12:25am run, and there’s no Hollyoaks first-look to break them up.

Lego Masters Australia — E4, 5:35pm

A new series gets underway, with pairs of amateur builders racing to construct working flying machines out of Lego and send them off a ten-metre platform. It’s the only genuinely new programme E4 airs all evening, and it owns most of the hour before the channel’s early-evening film.

The Devil Wears Prada — E4, 6:50pm

Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep star in the 2006 comedy-drama about a fashion assistant surviving her tyrannical magazine-editor boss. It runs for over two hours, filling the whole slot up to the 9pm news-free changeover into Celebrity Gogglebox.

Celebrity Gogglebox — E4, 9pm

This edition pulls together a run of famous faces from across the current series, watching back some of the year’s biggest TV moments together on the sofa rather than reacting to anything new.

Bad Boys for Life — E4, 10pm

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence return as Mike and Marcus for the 2020 sequel, in which a cartel boss’s son comes looking for revenge just as Marcus is ready to hang up his badge. At two hours twenty-five minutes, it runs past midnight and closes out E4’s evening.

Reality

Married at First Sight Australia is E4’s most-watched acquisition and the one that reorders the whole schedule when a series is on. Three or four episodes a week, strangers paired off by “experts”, married at first meeting, then sat at a dinner party until somebody says the unforgivable thing. The UK version plays much quieter. Its couples absorb the pressure rather than detonate at the table, which is more realistic and considerably less watchable.

Celebs Go Dating has been on E4 since 2016 and has never changed shape: two relationship coaches, currently Paul C. Brunson and Anna Williamson, a handful of celebrity clients, and dates with members of the public.

Gogglebox is a Friday-night Channel 4 show. E4 runs the repeats.

Soap

Hollyoaks has been on Channel 4 since 1995 and in E4’s first-look slot long enough that most viewers under 35 have never known it any other way. It takes on the heavy issue storylines soaps go in for, mental health and addiction and the rest, while keeping the pace quick and the cast young.

US comedy

The Big Bang Theory, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Modern Family anchor daytime, and all three sit on Channel 4’s streaming service on demand. The Simpsons is the exception to everything. E4 holds so much of it that a single day can jump across two decades of the show without anyone at the channel appearing to mind.

E4 +1, E4 Extra and the Channel 4 family

E4 +1 on Freeview 30 is a straight one-hour timeshift, so 7pm here is 8pm there.

E4 Extra is the sister channel for repeats and extra runs of E4’s biggest shows. It launched in 2022 in the slot 4Music vacated, and sits on Freeview 31 and Sky 139.

Both sit in the wider Channel 4 family alongside the main channel, More4 for factual and Film4 for cinema. All of them are commercially funded. Channel 4 is publicly owned but takes no licence fee money and no government subsidy, a distinction worth remembering the next time somebody complains about the adverts.
