What’s on E4 today

Overnight opens with Gogglebox at 1:25am, then two episodes of Below Deck and a short Modern Family before the Hollyoaks Omnibus at 4:30am, which rounds up the previous week’s storylines rather than showing anything new. Two more Hollyoaks episodes follow at 6am and 6:30am — also catch-up, not new — ahead of a brief Rude(ish) Tube Shorts and Couples Come Dine with Me at 7am.

Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares USA runs twice from 8am, then America’s Funniest Home Videos twice from 10am. The Simpsons dominates the afternoon: four episodes from 12pm move between an older series 21 outing and three from series 27, followed by two episodes of The Goldbergs from its debut series and four of Modern Family through to 4:30pm.

Early evening brings four more Simpsons episodes back to back from 5pm, a separate series 33 run that includes the Treehouse of Horror XXXII Halloween special at 6pm — eight Simpsons episodes across the day in total.

Monday 31 August 2026 is a genuine first-look night on E4, which shapes the whole evening around Hollyoaks before handing over to a run of US reality formats.

The Simpsons, 6pm and 6:30pm

Two episodes from series 33 close out the daytime run before primetime starts. The 6pm slot is the Halloween anthology instalment Treehouse of Horror XXXII, followed at 6:30pm by a more conventional Springfield story.

Hollyoaks, 7pm — the first-look

This is the one genuinely new Hollyoaks episode of the day, a full 24 hours ahead of its Channel 4 showing. A new friendship pushes Ste towards relapse, while Dee Dee steps in as Nancy’s health takes a turn for the worse. It follows three earlier showings that are not new: the 4:30am Omnibus rounding up last week, and catch-up repeats at 6am and 6:30am.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine, 7:30pm — restarting from the pilot

The half-hour after Hollyoaks goes to Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but it’s the 2013 pilot rather than a fresh instalment — Jake Peralta and the Nine-Nine as viewers first met them, not a new episode in an ongoing run.

Ladies of London: The New Reign, 8pm

Martha hosts a My Fair Lady-themed picnic in this series 4 episode. The synopsis calls it a “brand new series”, but the number in the schedule data puts it at episode 6 of that run, so treat it as a mid-series instalment rather than a launch.

Below Deck Down Under, 9pm

Circus night brings its usual chaos, and an argument flares up in the galley. Like the show before it, this is billed as a new series in its own synopsis but sits at episode 14 of series 3 — a returning episode, not a premiere.

Gogglebox and First Dates, 10pm and 11pm

Gogglebox closes out the reality run at 10pm with its regular sofa commentary, and First Dates takes the last hour of the night from 11pm, pairing up strangers over dinner at the same London restaurant.

Reality

Married at First Sight Australia is E4’s most-watched acquisition and the one that reorders the whole schedule when a series is on. Three or four episodes a week, strangers paired off by “experts”, married at first meeting, then sat at a dinner party until somebody says the unforgivable thing. The UK version plays much quieter. Its couples absorb the pressure rather than detonate at the table, which is more realistic and considerably less watchable.

Celebs Go Dating has been on E4 since 2016 and has never changed shape: two relationship coaches, currently Paul C. Brunson and Anna Williamson, a handful of celebrity clients, and dates with members of the public.

Soap

Hollyoaks has been on Channel 4 since 1995 and in E4’s first-look slot long enough that most viewers under 35 have never known it any other way. It takes on the heavy issue storylines soaps go in for, mental health and addiction and the rest, while keeping the pace quick and the cast young.

US comedy

The Big Bang Theory, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Modern Family anchor daytime, and all three sit on Channel 4’s streaming service on demand. The Simpsons is the exception to everything. E4 holds so much of it that a single day can jump across two decades of the show without anyone at the channel appearing to mind.

E4 +1, E4 Extra and the Channel 4 family

E4 +1 on Freeview 30 is a straight one-hour timeshift, so 7pm here is 8pm there.

E4 Extra is the sister channel for repeats and extra runs of E4’s biggest shows. It launched in 2022 in the slot 4Music vacated, and sits on Freeview 31 and Sky 139.

Both sit in the wider Channel 4 family alongside the main channel, More4 for factual and Film4 for cinema. All of them are commercially funded. Channel 4 is publicly owned but takes no licence fee money and no government subsidy, a distinction worth remembering the next time somebody complains about the adverts.
