Perfect Plan takes over straight after, a 2010 thriller with Emily Rose as a Chicago estate agent who finds a cash buyer for a high-end house, then learns the sellers were killed for it. Mistaken follows at 7:37pm — Lana Parrilla’s 2008 identity-theft thriller, and a straight repeat of last night’s 5:57pm slot rather than a new pairing. The real hook comes after 9pm: Beyond The Law at 9:09pm and Mercenary: Absolution at 10:38pm both put Steven Seagal on screen, the first alongside Johnny Messner and the late DMX, the second facing off against Vinnie Jones.

What’s on GREAT! Movies today

The overnight run mixes a recent thriller with genuine classic Hollywood. The Trust opens at 12:23am, followed at 2:02am by the Steven Seagal actioner Contract to Kill, in which his CIA enforcer chases an arms-and-terror plot from the Mexican border to Istanbul. Hellgate takes the 3:41am slot, a supernatural thriller with Cary Elwes and William Hurt in which a car-crash survivor starts seeing the dead. Angel and the Badman closes the small hours at 5:14am — a proper piece of Hollywood history, John Wayne’s 1947 western as a wounded gunslinger nursed back to health, and reformed, by a Quaker farming family.

Air Rescue then holds breakfast and the start of the morning for the best part of two and a half hours from 7:05am, six back-to-back episodes following the pilots and paramedics of Australia’s Westpac Lifesaver helicopter service as they’re scrambled to a fresh emergency each time. Abilene Town takes over at 10:06am, Randolph Scott’s 1946 western as a Kansas marshal caught between homesteaders and cattlemen at the end of the Chisholm Trail. Amber Alert closes the morning at 11:47am, a child-abduction thriller told largely through the eyes of two bystanders racing to save a kidnapped girl.

The afternoon runs on the same crime-and-thriller strand the channel leans on most days. Summer House opens it at 1:24pm, built around a family curse that turns lethal for the men who inherit the property. Out of Control follows at 2:57pm. Lana Parrilla stars as a divorcee who learns a stranger has been living under her old identity — and that the woman is fleeing a dangerous ex. GREAT! Movies showed this one less than a day ago, at 5:57pm yesterday evening, so tonight’s outing is a straight repeat rather than a new pairing.

Beyond The Law — GREAT! Movies, 9:09pm

The evening’s Steven Seagal double opens here. He plays a former detective pulled back into a corrupt city after his estranged son is murdered, with Johnny Messner and the late DMX rounding out the cast — a reunion for Seagal and DMX nearly two decades on from Exit Wounds.

Mercenary: Absolution — GREAT! Movies, 10:38pm

Seagal stays on screen straight after, this time as a contract killer torn between a government handler and a girl on the run from a human-trafficking boss played by Vinnie Jones. Two Seagal films back to back from 9pm is the whole pitch for the night, and it’s worth one line rather than two near-identical write-ups.

Classic Hollywood and westerns

The overnight schedule is where the channel’s deepest library lives: 1950s and ’60s Hollywood, John Wayne westerns through to Alan Ladd dramas, accumulated over more than a decade of broadcasting. It’s also the only stretch of the day where the films are genuinely old rather than just cheap, and if you set a recorder for anything here, set it for the small hours.

Lifetime-style crime and thriller movies

Daytime belongs to the made-for-TV thriller that Lifetime and its American equivalents turn out at pace. Missing persons, family secrets, one twist, done inside 90 minutes. Quality swings about a good deal from title to title, and none of it is trying to be more than something to have on.

Contemporary action and thriller premieres

Evenings bring newer titles, generally from the last five to twenty years, mostly domestic-menace thrillers with the occasional proper action picture and a recognisable lead.

GREAT! Movies isn’t where it used to be. Here’s where to actually find it now:

Until 4 September 2025 this was an ordinary aerial-only channel on Freeview 50 and Sky 321. GREAT! Mystery has those slots now. Nothing about it costs money, but the broadband requirement is the bit that catches people out, particularly anyone still using an older box.

GREAT! Movies streams free through Great! Player at great-player.com, no account required, with apps for Amazon Fire TV, YouView, and Samsung and LG smart TVs, plus the App Store and Google Play. Alongside the live stream there’s a library of past films, which is how you pick something up after it has aired.

Verdict

The programming hasn’t got worse. The finding of it has. A channel that used to be a couple of button presses away now wants a broadband connection, a Freeview Play box or the Great! Player app, and some willingness to go looking, which is a genuine cost for something whose whole appeal was being there when you flicked past it.

Whether the effort is worth it depends on the night. Tonight is built around Steven Seagal, on screen twice in a row from 9pm in Beyond The Law and Mercenary: Absolution, with Perfect Plan ahead of them and a repeat of Mistaken filling the gap between. Solid rather than essential, but the Seagal double is reason enough to leave it on.
