Overnight belongs to two older genre pictures. Highlander III: The Sorcerer opens at 1:10am, Christopher Lambert’s immortal swordsman dragged back into battle when his old enemy Kane resurfaces. The House That Dripped Blood follows at 3:05am, a portmanteau horror with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing in which a detective works through a set of unsettling cases, among them a waxwork with a mind of its own. Legend goes off air just before 5am and stays dark until 5:30am, then runs teleshopping until programmes resume at 8am with Walker, Texas Ranger (series three, episode fifteen), Alex taking a job interview that turns into a kidnapping and leaving Walker and Trivette to track her down.

Series three, episode sixteen is the first half of a two-parter. A gang in clown masks is pulling off a run of multi-million dollar robberies, and the case turns personal after Logan, a man Walker counts as a close friend, is shot dead. Part two follows another night.

Flight of the Intruder — Legend, 9pm

Brad Johnson leads this 1990 Vietnam War picture as a Navy bomber pilot who has lost patience with the chain of command, with Willem Dafoe as the veteran bombardier who becomes his closest ally. Danny Glover plays their commanding officer. Together the two airmen go after an anti-aircraft missile site the top brass won’t authorise a strike on, forcing the issue themselves.

Centurion — Legend, 11:25pm

Michael Fassbender closes the night as a Roman centurion left alive after Pictish fighters destroy the rest of his legion somewhere in the Scottish Highlands. What follows is a rescue mission to free his captured general, stripped of anything resembling comfort or safety. A tough, muddy piece of filmmaking to end on.

Horror hasn’t been dropped, just demoted. Amicus and Hammer-adjacent anthologies still turn up, along with independent chillers and oddities like Horror Express, though these days they land in the afternoon or after midnight rather than at 9pm.
