Sunday opens overnight with two action thrillers, then five episodes of Babylon 5 carry the late morning before a run of older adventure films – Treasure Island, The Land That Time Forgot and Donovan’s Reef – fills the afternoon. Overnight is two action thrillers back to back. In the Line of Duty opens at 1:20am, a 2019 crime thriller in which Aaron Eckhart’s disgraced cop races to save a police chief’s kidnapped daughter while a citizen journalist livestreams the chase online. Age of Kill follows at 3:15am, a 2015 thriller starring Martin Kemp in which a sniper is blackmailed into carrying out a string of shootings against a six-hour deadline. Legend goes off air just after 5am and stays dark until 5:30am, then runs teleshopping until programmes resume at 7am.

Babylon 5 fills the late-morning stretch, five episodes of series three running back to back from 7am to midday, episodes 11 to 15 in order as the station deals with the fallout of severing ties with Earth and the growing Shadow war.

The afternoon belongs to three older adventure films. Treasure Island opens at midday, the 1972 version with Orson Welles as Long John Silver and Kim Burfield as Jim Hawkins. The Land That Time Forgot follows at 1:55pm, Doug McClure’s 1974 Edgar Rice Burroughs adaptation about a submarine crew stranded on a lost continent of dinosaurs. Donovan’s Reef closes out the afternoon at 3:45pm, John Ford’s 1963 South Seas comedy with John Wayne and Lee Marvin. Gregory Peck’s 1951 cavalry western holds the entire early evening, running through to 7:50pm. Peck plays a hard-nosed officer who picks six mismatched soldiers, several of them nursing grudges against him, to hold an isolated fort against an Apache raiding party. A ten-minute Legend Lowdown trailer reel, previewing next month’s films and series, fills the gap before the schedule proper resumes at 8pm.

The Twilight Zone — Legend, 8pm

Rod Serling’s anthology gets a single hour-long outing tonight rather than its usual pairing: this is the opener of the show’s fourth season, when the format briefly expanded from thirty minutes to sixty. The episode, In His Image, follows a man who discovers he was built by his own creator as a mechanical double.

Reign of Fire — Legend, 9pm

Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey lead this 2002 post-apocalyptic fantasy, in which a scattered community of survivors teams up with an American dragon hunter after decades of fire-breathing devastation. Big, silly and unashamed of it.

Drive Angry — Legend, 11:05pm

Nicolas Cage closes the night in this 2011 fantasy thriller, playing a father who breaks out of Hell to track down the satanic cult leader who murdered his daughter and now plans to sacrifice his granddaughter.

Cult horror and its Horror Channel roots

Horror hasn’t been dropped, just demoted. Amicus and Hammer-adjacent anthologies still turn up, along with independent chillers and oddities like Horror Express, though these days they land in the afternoon or after midnight rather than at 9pm.

Sci-fi, fantasy and action films

Most evenings belong to genre cinema of a specific vintage: Van Damme, Steven Seagal, Dolph Lundgren, and further back, the fantasy adventures Ray Harryhausen animated.
