More4 is Channel 4’s factual and lifestyle channel: property shows, food formats and the fly-on-the-wall documentaries that would crowd out the main channel’s schedule. It launched on 10 October 2005 and has been free to air since 6 May 2008, when it dropped the subscription requirement it had briefly carried on satellite. What’s on More4 today

Friday daytime on More4 sticks to the channel’s usual rerun pattern. Four in a Bed runs five editions from 10am to 12:40pm, Come Dine with Me takes over for five more between 12:40pm and 3:20pm, and Four in a Bed returns for a further run from 3:20pm through to the 5:20pm payment-day finale.

Before any of that, the small hours carry 999: On the Front Line and two episodes of 24 Hours in Police Custody, followed by an early A Place in the Sun repeat and a long teleshopping block that fills the gap until Heir Hunters restarts the daytime schedule just before 9am.

Car S.O.S — More4, 5:50pm and 6:50pm

Two restorations back to back. The 5:50pm episode sends Tim Shaw and Fuzz Townshend to Loughborough for Pravesh’s 1992 Saab 900 Turbo. The 6:50pm one is a landmark for the pair: their hundredth car, a 1978 MGB GT, and their first electric conversion, promised by Caroline to her late father.

Grand Designs — More4, 7:55pm

Edward and Hazel set out to build a white art deco lighthouse on a clifftop in north Devon. The setting is spectacular and the plan optimistic, and it starts going wrong almost straight away, which is the shape most of the memorable episodes take.

Carpe Diem — More4, 9pm

The night’s one genuinely new thing, and the pick if you want something with more to it than a restoration. A comic crime drama from the Walter Presents strand, opening with Tom released after seventeen years inside. He has spent them studying law, and intends to clear his name and take on other wrongful convictions. In French with subtitles.

24 Hours in A&E — More4, 10:05pm and 11:10pm

Two from series seven at St George’s. The first has seven-year-old Freddie in after falling from a tree, and Martin, 66, collapsed at home with dizziness and failing eyesight. The second follows Roger, a retired builder who has fallen four metres from his daughter’s roof, and 29-year-old Tad, whose heart rate is high enough to risk a stroke.

Fly-on-the-wall documentary

This is the strand More4 is known for. 24 Hours in A&E and 999: On the Front Line both use the same method: fixed cameras, real emergencies, no reconstructions. Neither has changed that formula in over a decade of running.

Property and food formats

A Place in the Sun and Come Dine with Me anchor the daytime and early-evening schedule. One is about the fantasy of starting again somewhere warmer; the other is about strangers cooking for each other and being far too honest about the results. Four in a Bed does the same job for the B&B trade. Between them they account for most of what More4 broadcasts before 6pm.

Imported drama and classic comedy

More4 also fills gaps with imported crime drama, a fair amount of Nordic noir, and repeats from Channel 4’s own sitcom back-catalogue. It’s schedule filler between the factual strands rather than anything the channel commissions for itself.

Verdict

More4 doesn’t try to be flashy, and that’s the point. It’s where Channel 4 parks programming that works without gimmicks: a hospital ward, a B&B owner docking marks over a soggy fry-up, a couple arguing about whether they can live 40 minutes from a decent school. The cost of that is a daytime schedule built almost entirely from four recycled formats, which does wear thin if you sit through the whole thing.

Tonight that’s two Car S.O.S rebuilds carrying the early evening, Grand Designs at 7:55pm, a new episode of The Reclaimers: Made in Suffolk at 9pm, then 24 Hours in A&E closing the night with two fresh cases at 10pm and 11:05pm. Most of it is a rerun, but the 9pm slot for once isn’t.
