What’s on Sky Arts today

Tuesday’s overnight hours run to two long-form specials, Mozart’s Women: A Musical Journey at 12:30am and the National Theatre’s Much Ado About Nothing at 2am, before Inside Art turns to Van Gogh at the Courtauld Gallery at 4:30am and The Art Of Film opens at 5am. Breakfast brings Venice: A Concert For Our Climate at 6am and a first outing for Backstage With The London Philharmonic Orchestra at 7am, then two half-hour editions of Artist Of The Year: Masterclass from 8am.

Archive drama takes over from 9am, with two runs each of Tales Of The Unexpected and Alfred Hitchcock Presents either side of Discovering: Gene Wilder at 11am and a second Art Of Film episode at midday. No concert, no opera and no live music at all tonight — Tuesday 25 August 2026 is an anthology-and-documentary evening on Sky Arts.

Tales Of The Unexpected — Sky Arts, 6pm & 6:30pm

Two archive half-hours open the night. “Parson’s Pleasure” (series 3, episode 6) has a bogus clergyman try to talk a farming family out of a valuable antique for a fraction of its worth, and “The Stinker” (episode 7) follows straight after with one of the anthology’s marital revenge plots. Twist endings on both, as the format demands.

Alfred Hitchcock Presents — Sky Arts, 7pm & 7:30pm

The double bill spans opposite ends of the show’s history. “Where Beauty Lies” at 7pm is a late instalment, series 7, episode 38; “Revenge” at 7:30pm is the reverse — the very first episode Alfred Hitchcock Presents ever made, from when the format was brand new. Watched back to back, it’s the finished product sitting next to its own prototype.

The World In A Painting: Vermeer’s Hat — Sky Arts, 8pm

This 75-minute documentary, drawn from historian Timothy Brook’s book of the same name, uses a single 17th-century Vermeer canvas as a route into the wider story of Dutch trade and exploration during the Golden Age. It runs through to 9:15pm.

Art Traffickers: Treasures Stolen from the Tombs — Sky Arts, 9:15pm

Third of four episodes in this documentary series on the black market in looted antiquities, tracing stolen pieces back to the sites and tombs they were taken from.

Wonderland: From JM Barrie to JRR Tolkien — Sky Arts, 10:15pm

A new four-part series opens here, tracing the invented worlds built by British children’s writers — Neverland and Middle-earth chief among them — and what those imagined geographies reveal about the people who dreamed them up.

The Movies — Sky Arts, 11:15pm

The documentary strand reaches the second half of the 1960s, taking in the shift from studio spectacle towards films like The Graduate and West Side Story.

The two Hitchcock strands and Tales of the Unexpected are anthology drama, built on twist endings rather than continuing storylines, which is exactly why they survive being shown out of order at half past one on a midweek afternoon. The Movies puts short introductions in front of older features so daytime viewers get some context first.

Sky Arts earns its keep, mostly. Tonight is quieter than most Sky Arts evenings, with the concert slot dark and three documentaries filling most of primetime instead. The Hitchcock pairing is the more interesting hour for anyone who follows the show: putting the first episode ever made next to one from six series later says more about how the format bedded in than either half-hour does alone. Wonderland’s opening episode is worth catching too, if literary history appeals more than hard science or true crime.
