Peter Sellers closes the night out as a prisoner planning to break out of his easygoing open jail, pull off a diamond robbery, and slip back into his cell before anyone clocks he’s been gone. One of the better British prison comedies of 1960, and a tidy way to end a night that runs without a single ad-break-style split.

Suspect is the one to catch tonight, from 9:20pm. Cher won a Golden Globe nomination for her turn as a defence lawyer out of her depth, and Liam Neeson, years before he became an action star, plays her mute client with real restraint. Peter Yates keeps the courtroom scenes tense without resorting to the usual genre tricks. Stick around past midnight and Two Way Stretch, from 11:45pm, is a decent nightcap: Peter Sellers’s prison caper is broader and cheerier, but it’s one of the sharper British comedies of its year.
