Monday brings Holocaust Memorial Day programming to the fore, with BBC Two screening the powerful film One Life. Elsewhere, it’s finale night for both Celebrity SAS and After the Flood, Clive Myrie starts his African adventure, and the Game of Thrones universe continues on Sky Atlantic. Plus there’s quiz night heaven on BBC Two.
Quick Picks: Tonight’s Best
- One Life – BBC Two, 9pm – Anthony Hopkins in powerful Holocaust Memorial Day drama
- Clive Myrie’s African Adventure – BBC Two, 6:30pm – New travel series begins
- Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins – C4, 9pm – Series finale with brutal interrogation
- A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – Sky Atlantic, 9pm – Game of Thrones prequel continues
Early Evening (6pm – 8pm)
Clive Myrie’s African Adventure – BBC Two, 6:30pm
The Mastermind host begins a new ten-part travel series exploring the Africa he fell in love with when he was based in Johannesburg as a BBC reporter over twenty years ago. Starting in South Africa, Myrie visits Soweto to meet a former colleague and reflect on how the country has changed since apartheid. There’s a lunch with Nelson Mandela’s granddaughter Ndileka, who shares personal memories of her grandfather, before Myrie throws himself into local experiences – trying the frankly terrifying sport of “car spinning” and dancing to Amapiano at a carwash party. It’s gentle and amiable, with Myrie’s easy laughter a pleasant contrast to his serious newsreader persona.
EastEnders – BBC One, 7:30pm
The regular Monday episode continues the drama in Albert Square. Available to stream early on BBC iPlayer from 6am.
Prime Time (8pm onwards)
Post Office: Who’s to Blame? – BBC One, 8pm
Panorama returns to the Horizon IT scandal that has been rumbling through the courts and Parliament for years. This investigation attempts to pin down exactly who was responsible for the disaster that saw hundreds of sub-postmasters wrongly prosecuted. Essential viewing for anyone following this ongoing story.
Only Connect – BBC Two, 8pm
The grand finale of the current series sees the 5Ks take on the Pitchers in what promises to be an epic battle. The Pitchers have a secret weapon: team member Jonathan Gibson, who might be the greatest quiz show contestant of his generation. He’s previously won Mastermind at just 24 (the youngest ever winner) and appeared on University Challenge. Victoria Coren Mitchell presides over the final. This is sandwiched between the last Celebrity Mastermind at 7:30pm and a University Challenge quarter-final at 8:30pm – a proper quiz night triple-header.
Lynley – BBC One, 8:30pm
Leo Suter and Sofia Barclay continue their detective partnership in the reboot of the Elizabeth George adaptation. The case they’re investigating is getting uncomfortably close to problems within their own department – a retiring officer appears to have been slapdash in his work, and DCI Brian Nies (Daniel Mays) isn’t pleased about Lynley and Havers stirring up trouble. What starts as a professional grievance turns personal when the murderer they’re hunting makes a move that hits close to home.
One Life – BBC Two, 9pm ⭐
This is the one to watch tonight. Screening to mark Holocaust Memorial Day (which falls tomorrow), One Life tells the remarkable true story of Nicholas Winton, a British stockbroker who saved 669 predominantly Jewish children from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia in the late 1930s. Johnny Flynn plays the young Winton organising the rescue operation, while Anthony Hopkins portrays him decades later, haunted by guilt over those he couldn’t save. A 1988 appearance on BBC’s That’s Life! brings unexpected closure.
Director James Hawes actually began his career as a researcher on That’s Life!, while Helena Bonham Carter (who plays Winton’s formidable mother) has her own family connection – her maternal grandfather issued thousands of transit visas to Jews fleeing Europe, going against direct orders. It’s a film full of such historical resonance. Where Saturday’s Zone of Interest showed the banality of evil, this offers something more hopeful: the extraordinary impact one person can make.
After the Flood – ITV1, 9pm
The series finale of the flooding disaster conspiracy drama. Pay attention to DS Sam Bradley (Jill Halfpenny) – there’s something suspicious about her claim that she wasn’t checking her phone during the attack on the Bensons’ reputation. Meanwhile, Phil Mackie has made an enemy of Jack Radcliffe (Philip Glenister), and that’s not a wise move given Jack has nothing left to lose. The full series is available on ITVX.
Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins – Channel 4, 9pm
The finale sees the five remaining celebrity recruits face 12 hours of brutal interrogation designed to break them. The Directing Staff are particularly concerned about how Ben Cohen will handle it, Dani Dyer gets too chatty during questioning, and Gabby Allen’s attitude apparently “could get her shot” in a real-world scenario. It’s genuinely unpleasant to watch, which is probably the point. Who actually finishes the course may surprise you.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – Sky Atlantic, 9pm
Episode two of the Game of Thrones prequel (also available at 3am for the keen). Hedge knight Dunk (Peter Claffey) goes from pavilion to pavilion trying to find a sponsor for the tournament, but nobody’s heard of his beloved master Ser Arlan and nobody much cares. His tiny companion Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) knows how the world really works, and the dynamic between these two continues to charm. Bertie Carvel brings a certain magnetism to Prince Baelor. Available on NOW.
Late Night
Space Season – BBC Four, 10pm
BBC Four launches a quartet of space-themed evenings ahead of the Artemis 2 lunar mission – the first time a crew will have been this close to the Moon since 1972. Tonight’s programming includes a Tim Peake video diary and a vintage 1966 Horizon. More to come next week.
Industry – BBC One, 10:40pm
The financial drama continues as Harper digs for dirt on Tender (the hot payment app now run by Yasmin’s husband) so she can short its stock. The plot whisks from the Austrian Alps to Sunderland’s back streets, exploring how money really moves.
What We Do in the Shadows – BBC Two, 11:15pm
Double bill of the vampire mockumentary. The Staten Island bloodsuckers have always maintained they work “at the railroad” – a lie that becomes problematic when their human friend Sean asks them to put in a word for a job.
Sport
Football: Everton v Leeds – Sky Sports, 6:30pm (k/o 8pm)
Premier League action from the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Tennis: Australian Open – TNT Sports, 7am
Day ten coverage from Melbourne as the tournament reaches the quarter-finals.
Snooker: German Masters – TNT Sports, 2pm/7pm
Day one from Berlin.
