Overnight is two films back to back. Mel Gibson plays a getaway driver thrown into a brutal Mexican prison in How I Spent My Summer Vacation from 1:20am (better known under its later release title, Get the Gringo), followed by 1978’s The Inglorious Bastards at 3:10am, in which escaped American prisoners turn resistance fighters to steal a Nazi rocket warhead. Legend goes off air just after 5am and stays dark until 5:30am, then runs teleshopping until programmes resume properly at 8am.

Breakfast and the morning are a run of genre television. Walker, Texas Ranger opens the day at 8am as Trivette works out the pattern behind a string of robberies, before The Six Million Dollar Man at 9am sets up tonight’s 6pm follow-up: Steve Austin finds a forgotten island populated by the descendants of stranded aliens. Babylon 5 takes 10am, the station’s command staff cutting ties with Earth and Delenn proposing a Minbari rebirth ceremony to mark it. Congo — Legend, 9pm

Legend’s film of the night is the one with the most pedigree behind it: Frank Marshall directing Michael Crichton’s own adaptation of his novel, with Dylan Walsh and Laura Linney leading an expedition into the jungle after King Solomon’s mythical diamond mines. Ernie Hudson and Tim Curry round out a cast that’s more interesting than the killer-gorilla premise suggests. It runs as one continuous block to 11:10pm, no ad-break splitting tonight.

Alien Nation — Legend, 11:10pm

James Caan and Mandy Patinkin close the night as an odd-couple pairing of human and alien cop, working a murder that opens up questions about the refugee ship that brought thousands of aliens to Earth. Late, but a proper double bill with Congo for anyone staying up.
