EntertainmentLegend is what the old Horror Channel turned into after its 2022 rebrand: still free to air, still fond of a monster, but now handing most of its evenings to sci-fi, fantasy and action cinema. Friday opens overnight with two crime films, Cold In July and Backtrace, then a repeat of last night’s Walker, Texas Ranger finale carries into a run of vintage American genre TV – The Dukes of Hazzard and Babylon 5 – before the shark thriller Shark Season, the Randolph Scott western Gunfighters and the John Payne western Santa Fe Passage fill the afternoon. Star Trek – The Original Series opens its second season at 5pm, before the evening brings back The Dukes of Hazzard and Babylon 5, then Walker, Texas Ranger opens a brand new story at 8pm, and the night hands over entirely to a single four-hour gangster epic to close. Full breakdown below.

What’s on Legend today
Overnight brings two crime films rather than a genre double bill. Cold In July, starring Michael C. Hall as a father whose killing of a home intruder turns him into an uneasy local celebrity, only for the dead man’s own father to come hunting for payback, opens at 1am, followed by Sylvester Stallone in Backtrace at 3:10am, playing the sole surviving thief from a bank heist given an experimental drug to help crack the case after a brain injury wipes his memory. Legend goes off air just after 5am, with a card announcing programmes resume at 5:30am, then runs teleshopping until the schedule proper starts at 8am.
Daytime opens at 8am with a repeat of last night’s Walker, Texas Ranger finale: an assassin has kidnapped the presidential candidate and Walker takes him on alone. The Dukes of Hazzard and an episode of Babylon 5 follow at 9am and 10am – Garibaldi kidnapped by a secretive cult while the Rangers look to Delenn for new leadership – then the shark thriller Shark Season at 11am, following three kayakers trapped on a sinking island. Randolph Scott’s 1947 western Gunfighters takes the 1pm slot, following a former gunslinger pulled back into gunplay when local ranchers are threatened off land that’s rightfully theirs, and John Payne’s 1955 western Santa Fe Passage follows at 3pm. Star Trek – The Original Series opens its second season at 5pm with “Who Mourns for Adonais?”, in which an entity insisting he is the Greek god Apollo orders the Enterprise crew to beam down and pay him homage, ahead of the evening line-up below.
Legend tonight — primetime and the evening schedule
Here’s the Legend primetime line-up for tonight, Friday 4 September 2026.
The Dukes of Hazzard — Legend, 6pm
The Dukes of Hazzard takes the 6pm slot. A neighbour who’s expecting is being targeted by a crime boss after the sizeable trust fund waiting for her child, and Bo and Luke step in to keep her safe.
Babylon 5 — Legend, 7pm
At 7pm, it’s Babylon 5. Delegates from Earth’s religious orders touch down on the station just as G’Kar’s fortunes turn back home – he’s been seized by Lord Refa on Narn – while Londo quietly sets a scheme of his own in motion.
Walker, Texas Ranger — Legend, 8pm
The 8pm hour brings Walker, Texas Ranger‘s series opener – a new story, not a continuation of this morning’s repeat. An escaped convict works through everyone who put him away, saving Walker for last. The feed’s series number contradicts its own synopsis here, so we’re naming it by content rather than printing a number we can’t stand behind.
Once Upon A Time In America — Legend, 9pm
Once Upon A Time In America (1984) takes over the rest of Legend’s night. Robert De Niro and James Woods play childhood friends from New York who become wealthy, powerful gangsters through the 1920s, and the film runs unbroken for four hours twenty minutes, through to 1:20am – the whole back half of Legend’s evening in one sitting.
What kind of shows are on Legend
Cult horror and its Horror Channel roots
Horror hasn’t been dropped, just demoted. Amicus and Hammer-adjacent anthologies still turn up, along with independent chillers and oddities like Horror Express, though these days they land in the afternoon or after midnight rather than at 9pm.
Sci-fi, fantasy and action films
Most evenings belong to genre cinema of a specific vintage: Van Damme, Steven Seagal, Dolph Lundgren, and further back, the fantasy adventures Ray Harryhausen animated. Film4 has the recent theatrical releases covered. Legend is working two or three decades earlier, and there is less competition for that ground than you would think.
Classic genre television
Very few channels still hand hours to vintage American genre TV. Legend does. The Twilight Zone runs as a nightly double bill, and Star Trek, Babylon 5 and The Six Million Dollar Man fill most weekday daytimes.
How to watch Legend
Channel numbers
Here’s where to find Legend across the main UK television platforms:
| Platform | Channel |
|---|---|
| Freeview | 41 |
| Sky | 148 |
| Virgin Media | 149 |
| Freesat | 137 |
| Freely | 38 |
No subscription is required on any of them. Virgin Media and Freesat numbers can shift depending on your box and region, so trust your on-screen guide over this table if the two disagree.
Streaming online
Legend streams live and free through the WatchFreeUK app, available on Freeview Play, Freesat and YouView, and as a download on iOS, Android, Fire TV, Roku, and Samsung and LG smart TVs. No account or sign-up is required, which is more than can be said for most of its rivals. The catch-up section carries a selection of recently broadcast programmes, but licensing means not everything that airs stays available, and windows vary by title.
Legend Xtra and sister channels
Legend Xtra launched on 1 July 2022 as HorrorXtra and took its current name in a November 2023 refresh. Same broad mix of action, sci-fi and horror, free on Freeview channel 69, Sky 317, Virgin Media 171, Freesat 138 and Freely 51, with a +1 timeshift on Sky, Virgin Media and Freesat.
Both channels belong to the CBS AMC Networks UK Channels Partnership, a joint venture between Paramount Networks UK & Australia and AMC Networks International UK. True Crime and True Crime Xtra come from the same stable and sit alongside them in the WatchFreeUK app.

Verdict
Legend is not chasing prestige and would look daft if it tried. What it gives instead is proper scheduled hours to material other free channels treat as filler. Horror Channel-era chillers hold the fringes of the schedule, but most nights now belong to the action cinema Van Damme and his contemporaries were making through the 1990s.
Friday runs the same idea on different stock: two overnight crime films, a daytime built from Legend’s own vintage American TV strands running around a shark thriller and two classic westerns, then an evening that brings back The Dukes of Hazzard and Babylon 5 before Walker, Texas Ranger opens a fresh story at 8pm and hands over to a single four-hour gangster epic to close out the night. Nobody is pretending this is a discovery channel. It knows exactly what it is.
