More4 is Channel 4’s factual and lifestyle channel: property shows, food formats and the fly-on-the-wall documentaries that would crowd out the main channel’s schedule. It launched on 10 October 2005 and has been free to air since 6 May 2008, when it dropped the subscription requirement it had briefly carried on satellite. Friday’s More4 schedule runs to 28 slots built from a handful of unique programmes, and daytime is almost entirely given over to two property/format strands: two complete weeks of Four in a Bed either side of a full week of Come Dine with Me.

Overnight, 999: On the Front Line takes the 12:10am slot (series 6, episode 9), then two episodes of 24 Hours in A&E follow at 1:15am and 2:20am — series 13 episode 2, then series 12 episode 20, from two different runs rather than a matched pair. The Perfect Pitch airs just after 3:25am, then teleshopping and Discover Must Have Ideas: Shopping fill most of the rest of the night before Find It, Fix It, Flog It takes the 8:55am slot.

Four in a Bed opens the day proper at 10am with five episodes from series 13, running in order through to the pay-up finale at 12:10pm — a complete competition week. Come Dine with Me follows straight after: five episodes from the Essex week, running in order from 12:40pm to 2:50pm. Four in a Bed then returns at 3:20pm for a second complete week, this time series 2, running straight through five episodes to 5:20pm — the two runs are eleven years apart. Fifteen half-hours of format television back to back, and none of it reaches primetime. Carpe Diem — More4, 9pm

The 9pm hour belongs to Carpe Diem (series 1, episode 5). The case at its centre: a body turns up inside a car, and detectives quickly settle on Tom as their focus, since he was the final person known to have been in the victim’s company. An on-screen New: flag and a synopsis that opens by describing a “brand new series” both suggest a launch, but the feed’s own episode count says otherwise — this is the fifth outing of a run already under way. That distinction actually matters tonight, because More4 did have a genuine first episode in this slot last night, Sandi Toksvig’s; Carpe Diem doesn’t get to claim the same billing.

24 Hours in A&E — More4, 10:05pm

24 Hours in A&E closes out the Carpe Diem hour with series 12, episode 18 at 10:05pm, the first of a back-to-back double that carries the channel to midnight.

Property and food formats

A Place in the Sun and Come Dine with Me anchor the daytime and early-evening schedule. One is about the fantasy of starting again somewhere warmer; the other is about strangers cooking for each other and being far too honest about the results. Four in a Bed does the same job for the B&B trade. Between them they account for most of what More4 broadcasts before 6pm.

Imported drama and classic comedy

It’s where Channel 4 parks programming that works without gimmicks: a B&B owner docking marks over a soggy fry-up, or a couple converting a neo-Gothic cemetery lodge into a family home. Friday’s daytime schedule leans on that formula harder than usual — two complete Four in a Bed competitions, eleven years apart, either side of a full week of Come Dine with Me from Essex, fifteen half-hours of format television back to back.

The evening is quieter by comparison.
