More4 is Channel 4’s factual and lifestyle channel: property shows, food formats and the fly-on-the-wall documentaries that would crowd out the main channel’s schedule. It launched on 10 October 2005 and has been free to air since 6 May 2008, when it dropped the subscription requirement it had briefly carried on satellite. What’s on More4 today

Friday’s More4 schedule runs to almost 30 slots built from a handful of unique programmes, and daytime is almost entirely given over to the same property/format strands as usual: Four in a Bed and Come Dine with Me carrying the morning into the afternoon.

Overnight, 999: On the Front Line opens the schedule just after midnight, then two 24 Hours in A&E episodes and A Place in the Sun fill the small hours before the High Street shopping strand takes over from around 4am. Four in a Bed restarts the proper schedule at 8:55am with five episodes running through to 11:35am.

Come Dine with Me takes over with five episodes through to 2:15pm, when Four in a Bed returns for a further five-episode run ending at 4:20pm. Car S.O.S. airs twice in the early evening before Grand Designs picks up the schedule the moment it ends. See below.

Grand Designs — More4, 6:50pm and 7:55pm

Two self-build projects open the evening back to back. First, a couple attempt an enormous black minimalist block on a Scottish country estate; then a Manchester couple try to finish a curved glass house despite contractor trouble and a stretched budget.

Carpe Diem — More4, 9pm

Kevin McCloud’s programmes give way to Carpe Diem, the French thriller More4 picked up through Channel 4’s foreign-language Walter Presents strand. It launched here in August, and tonight’s outing is the sixth of a six-episode run rather than a new arrival — worth knowing if you’re tuning in expecting episode one.

24 Hours in A&E — More4, 10:05pm and 11:10pm

Two more emergency-department cases close out the night, including patients and families reflecting on the ups and downs of admission day on the same date as a royal wedding some years back.

This is the strand More4 is known for. 24 Hours in A&E and 999: On the Front Line both use the same method: fixed cameras, real emergencies, no reconstructions. Neither has changed that formula in over a decade of running.

Property and food formats

A Place in the Sun and Come Dine with Me anchor the daytime and early-evening schedule. One is about the fantasy of starting again somewhere warmer; the other is about strangers cooking for each other and being far too honest about the results. Four in a Bed does the same job for the B&B trade. Between them they account for most of what More4 broadcasts before 6pm.

Imported drama and classic comedy

More4 doesn’t try to be flashy, and that’s the point. It’s where Channel 4 parks programming that works without gimmicks: a B&B owner docking marks over a soggy fry-up, or a self-builder’s dream house running years over schedule. Friday’s daytime leans on the usual formula, Four in a Bed and Come Dine with Me carrying the day between them in back-to-back runs, most of it repeated within the week.

Tonight is worth a second look, though: two Grand Designs episodes lead into Carpe Diem at 9pm, before two more episodes of 24 Hours in A&E take the night into emergency-services territory. Carpe Diem is worth flagging on its own account — a genuine new Walter Presents drama, just not a brand-new arrival tonight specifically, since this is its sixth and final episode rather than its first.
