It Came from Outer Space, the 1953 sci-fi classic drawn from a Ray Bradbury treatment, opens the daytime films at 11am. Patrick follows at 12:45pm: Beattie Edmondson and Ed Skrein in the 2018 family comedy about a woman lumbered with her late grandmother’s badly behaved pug. A Few Good Men — Film4, 9pm

Tom Cruise’s Navy lawyer and Demi Moore’s co-counsel defend two Marines accused of murder at Guantanamo Bay, building to a courtroom collision with Jack Nicholson’s Colonel Jessup. Rob Reiner’s 1992 drama, scripted by Aaron Sorkin, is the pick of tonight’s schedule.

Darkman — Film4, 11:45pm

Liam Neeson plays a scientist disfigured by gangsters who rebuilds himself using unstable synthetic skin and turns vigilante. Sam Raimi made it in 1990, between the Evil Dead films and his Spider-Man trilogy, and it closes out the night.

I rate Film4, with reservations. The 9pm slot and the run after 11pm are what keep me coming back: recent releases, the odd Productions title, and foreign-language cinema you’d rarely stumble across on any other free channel. Daytime is mostly the same forty-odd Hollywood titles on rotation, and the ad breaks mid-film wear thin some nights.

Tonight’s line-up is a solid old-school Sunday spread rather than anything flashy. Entrapment at 4:40pm is worth catching from the start if you’re in early: Connery and Zeta-Jones circling each other through a run of increasingly implausible heists is still good fun. A Few Good Men at 9pm is the best-made thing on the schedule, with Sorkin’s dialogue and Nicholson’s Jessup doing more work than the plot strictly needs. Darkman at 11:45pm is there for anyone still up for early Raimi at his most gleefully over the top.
