Driven opens the night at 12:40am, followed by the disaster thriller Disaster Zone: Volcano In New York from 2:55am. Three Air Rescue instalments fill the small hours back to back from 4:35am to 5:50am (series 4, episodes 1 to 3), each gap marked by a short Good News on GREAT! Extra bulletin, before Teleshopping takes over from 6am to 9am.

Berlin Olympics 1936 opens the morning proper at 9:10am, followed by Raiders Of The Lost Art at 10:10am (series 1, episode 4). The western Hangman’s Knot fills the rest of the morning from 11:10am, split by a five-minute This Week Back Then bumper at 12:06pm before resuming at 12:11pm. Jonas and the team chase down a stolen computer chip in this series 3 outing, the same episode that already aired at 1pm. It’s a straightforward rerun opening the evening rather than a fresh instalment.

Burn Notice — GREAT! Action, 7pm–9pm

Two Burn Notice episodes run back to back, series 5’s finale into series 6’s opener, and both are also repeats of the 2pm and 3pm afternoon showings. Michael Westen’s team works to bring down Anson before the show pivots into life after Fiona’s imprisonment — a season hinge rather than a standalone hour, and worth knowing the two halves are really one continuous storyline.

The Girl In The Spider’s Web — GREAT! Action, 9pm

Claire Foy takes over the Lisbeth Salander role for this instalment, hunting down a stolen hacking programme with the usual mix of cyber-thriller plotting and hand-to-hand set pieces. A five-minute This Week Back Then bumper interrupts at 9:56pm; the film resumes at 10:01pm and runs on as one continuous film rather than two separate screenings.

The Avengers — GREAT! Action, 11:25pm

The night closes on a series 6 episode of the 1960s spy caper, Steed on the trail of an antique dagger rumoured to point to buried treasure — a lighter, tongue-in-cheek note to end an evening that’s otherwise been fairly serious.

Classic westerns and action icons

The channel advertises itself as the home of John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren, and for once the marketing is accurate. Westerns from the 1930s to the 1960s take up most of the daylight hours, series as well as films, with Tombstone Territory and The High Chaparral in heavy rotation. After that come the 1980s and ’90s action vehicles, built around a small and very dependable cast list.

Contemporary action and thrillers

Evenings go harder on star names, usually one bigger studio picture with a leaner independent thriller either side of it. Most had a cinema release before they arrived here.
