Villages by the Sea – BBC Two, 7pm

Arnside in Cumbria and the estuary that made it, in the half hour before the football.

Sam & Ade Go Birding – Channel 5, 7pm

Samuel West and Ade Edmondson, two men of a certain age, in the Yorkshire Dales with a pair of binoculars each. It is the Gone Fishing format transplanted, and it works for the same reason: the birds are a pretext for two friends talking.

They are after goosander chicks, greenfinch and the elusive curlew, and Edmondson turns out to be a genuinely poor birdwatcher, which West enjoys enormously. Edmondson’s asides about his gun-toting teacher father are revealing and then immediately undercut by a joke. The most relaxing hour on television this week, and West is also in All Creatures Great and Small at 9pm on the same channel.

Zathura: A Space Adventure – Film4, 7pm

Two squabbling brothers find a board game that fires their house into deep space. Essentially Jumanji in orbit, and better than that sounds.

EastEnders – BBC One, 7.30pm

The last episode of the week. The soap runs Monday to Thursday, so after tonight there is nothing until Monday.

Driving: How Old Is Too Old? Tonight – ITV1, 7.30pm

Ginny Buckley on older drivers, and what can be done to keep people over 70 safely behind the wheel without simply taking their licences away. Half an hour, before the soaps on ITV1.

Antiques Roadshow – Yesterday, 6pm

Yesterday opens with archive valuations and Simon Reeve in Burma at 7pm, before a new Bangers & Cash at 8pm in which Derek adds a 1930s Jaguar to the collection and Dave takes on a replica American Civil War artillery piece.

Prime Time

The Celebrity Traitors – BBC One, 8pm ⭐

The thing worth noticing about The Traitors is that the most charismatic players almost always reach the final weeks, whether or not they have done anything. Charm reads as innocence. That is a manageable problem with civilians; it is the whole game when everyone in the castle already has status.

Last year’s celebrity run made that obvious — Alan Carr’s unlikely romp to victory owed a good deal to the fact that banishing him would have meant snubbing a national treasure on camera. This year’s cast arrive knowing that happened, which should make them harder to play and probably will not.

Uncloaked follows at 9.15pm with Ed Gamble debriefing the banished, and there is a separate iPlayer spin-off in which Claudia Winkleman explains how she picked her Traitors. The Traitors universe continues to expand. 75 minutes tonight.

Match of the Day Wales Live: Wales v Norway – BBC Two, 7.30pm

Wales’ third group game, at the Cardiff City Stadium, kick-off 7.45pm. Both sides are chasing the same qualification place, so the result matters rather more than a third group fixture usually would. BBC Two stays with it until 10pm.

Long Lost Family – ITV1, 9pm

Two searches tonight, both hard. Anita was eight when she found out she had an older brother, given up for adoption before she was born and never spoken about since. Ruth’s late sister Mary had such severe post-natal depression that both her sons were taken into care, and the same thing happened after her next pregnancy — and, as Ruth says, nobody knows to this day what happened to them.

Taskmaster – Channel 4, 9pm

145 contestants in, and the format keeps finding new ways to expose people. Tonight one task is entirely about following instructions, which Richard Ayoade delivers in a deliberately twisted form, and another involves camouflage and, at one point, a contestant wearing an arrow on their head. Ayoade has described the show as a substitute for National Service, and there is something in that.

All Creatures Great and Small – Channel 5, 9pm

Siegfried has the whole practice working to his clock to stay ahead of a rival, which suits nobody. James and Tristan are unimpressed; Dorothy is the one who has to absorb the consequences. Samuel West is having a busy night on this channel.

The Holdovers – Film4, 9pm

Christmas 1970 at a New England boarding school, with a bitter teacher, a rebellious pupil and a grieving cook all stuck there over the holiday. Alexander Payne deliberately made a film that feels like it was shot in 1970 rather than one looking back at it, and that decision carries the whole thing. Four stars, and it needs the full two hours forty to work.

The Lady Vanishes – BBC Four, 8pm

Hitchcock’s 1938 train mystery, one of the last films he made in Britain, and still the most purely enjoyable. BBC Four follows with Alfred Hitchcock: Talking Pictures at 9.30pm, drawing on archive interviews with the man himself.

The Yorkshire Vet – Channel 5, 8pm

Matt Smith has an amorous wallaby to castrate, which is a sentence that requires no elaboration. Peter Wright deals with a difficult lambing.

Two Men on a Bike – Channel 4, 8pm

Travel by motorbike, before Taskmaster.

Late Night

Break Clause – Channel 4, 10pm

New series, double bill. Ben and Lil break up on the very day they move into a flat together in London, then discover that breaking a lease is considerably harder than breaking up. So they stay, splitting the bills and the rooms and not much else.

The premise requires a bit of goodwill — the first episode has to work fairly hard to explain why Ben cannot simply leave — but once that is out of the way it settles into something genuinely warm, and the cast includes a couple of SNL UK names and the American comedian Catherine Cohen. Second episode at 10.30pm.

Platoon – BBC Four, 10.10pm

Oliver Stone drawing directly on his own tour of Vietnam. An odd pairing after an evening of Hitchcock, but there it is.

It is the third group game for both, and they are competing for the same place, so it carries more weight than the fixture list suggests. Welsh viewers get the build-up from 7.15pm.
