Prime Time

Winter – ITV1, 9pm ⭐

The premise is that Dr Ethan Winter talks while he works, which in practice means Richard Armitage delivering a running commentary to the dead. If Emilia Fox’s team on Silent Witness had this man turn up at one of their postmortems, somebody would have handed him a gag inside five minutes.

It works far better than it should, largely because Armitage has one of the best voices on television and the series knows it — he is in demand as an audiobook narrator for a reason. There is something genuinely odd about watching a man chat away to a corpse as though it were still listening, and the show leans into that rather than apologising for it.

Where it is less sure-footed is the character sketch around him. Bristol-based, does things his own way, drives a classic car, irritates the police, carries a substantial quantity of personal anguish: the maverick-pathologist checklist gets worked through fairly comprehensively in the first hour. “Compost, rotting meat, faeces,” he announces at one point, sniffing at a crime scene, which tells you the register. The Repair Shop: Beyond the Barn – BBC One, 8pm

The spin-off idea is simple and it is the best thing the format has done in a while: follow the objects home. Tonight Ray Walters makes his first appearance in the barn, restoring a fountain pen bought in Singapore at the outbreak of the Second World War and carrying a rather good romance behind it.

Elsewhere the team catch up with things they have already mended — a much-hugged stuffed terrier that belonged to the late Queen, an unplayable guitar that once shared a Liverpool stage with the Beatles and whose owner turned down an invitation to join them permanently, and a trophy for the elite sport of stone-skimming. Brenton Walsh goes to Easdale near Oban to watch the skimming championships and try it himself, which is exactly the right note to end on.

Saving Lives at Sea – BBC Two, 8pm

RNLI crews in genuinely frightening water. At Porthcawl the Welsh volunteers go out in what they describe as the worst conditions they have worked in, to reach a man swept away; the Barry Dock lifeboat is sent to a remote island where two people have eaten a poisonous plant; and a French yacht loses steering off Jersey.

Grand Designs – Channel 4, 9pm

Kevin McCloud follows Seb, a London architect building a house on the site of his grandparents’ garden. Budgets are tight and the personal stakes are obvious. Channel 4 pairs it with Location, Location, Location at 8pm, where Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer are working with renters who cannot see a way into ownership.

Cause of Death – Channel 5, 9pm

Dr Richard Shepherd, the forensic pathologist who carried out the postmortem, goes back through the death of 19-year-old Jay Slater, whose body was found at the bottom of a Tenerife ravine in June 2024 after a fortnight of feverish online speculation. The inquest concluded it was an accident. His mother wants more answers, and Shepherd’s approach is to treat the investigation as a jigsaw and show which pieces actually fit.

Who Do You Think You Are? – BBC Two, 9pm

Another celebrity family tree, and the usual moment where an archivist slides a document across a table and the subject’s face changes.

The Shaman’s Grave – BBC Four, 8pm

In 1934 the bones of an ancient priestess were dug up in Germany and pressed into service by the Nazis as evidence for their Aryan mythology. Modern archaeologists have gone back to the remains with genetic profiling to work out who she actually was, and a computer-generated reconstruction of her face appears — atmospheric, if faintly PlayStation.

Glory – Film4, 9pm

The 54th Massachusetts, the Union army’s first Black regiment, and the assault on Fort Wagner. Denzel Washington won his first Oscar for it and the final twenty minutes still land.

Not Going Out – BBC One, 9.30pm

Anna and Toby are coming to dinner, Lucy has had a beauty treatment that has left her with lips Mick Jagger would query, and Lee is claiming his mother has been rushed to hospital to get out of it. Would I Lie to You? precedes it at 9pm.

Scotland’s Golden Coast – More4, 9pm

The east coast this week, including beach cricket in Fife and a geological trail at Dunbar.

Late Night

Middlemarch – BBC Four, 10pm

Two episodes of the 1994 adaptation, which remains the standard by which long-novel adaptations get judged. An Arena film about George Eliot’s life follows at 11.55pm, so BBC Four is effectively holding an Eliot evening.

Martin Compston: Living Las Vegas – Channel 4, 10pm

Compston has lived in Las Vegas for years, which gives this more weight than the usual celebrity travelogue. He eats with a local chef, visits the Arts District, tries the cowboy life at Sandy Valley Ranch and goes to the Grand Canyon.

Under Suspicion: Tracie Andrews – Road Rage Killer – Channel 5, 10pm

Emma Rigby plays Andrews in a dramatised account of the 1996 killing of Lee Harvey, and the road-rage story that turned out not to be one.

Candyman – BBC One, 10.40pm

The 2021 sequel, going back to Cabrini-Green and asking who benefits from the legend. Certificate 15.

The Magnificent Seven – ITV1, 10.45pm

Fuqua’s remake with Denzel Washington, straight out of the ITV news.

Shame – Film4, 11.25pm

Steve McQueen and Michael Fassbender. Bleak, and not remotely a comfortable way to end an evening.

Sport

No live sport at all on Freeview tonight. The India v West Indies one-day international and the third round of the Shenzhen Open snooker are both on TNT Sports, while the Darts World Grand Prix reaches day three at the Mattioli Arena in Leicester on Sky Sports. If you want to watch something competitive on a free channel, Tipping Point at 7.30pm is as close as it gets.

Winter is the launch and Armitage will carry it, but the hour that will actually stay with you is The Repair Shop at 8pm — following the mended things back into the houses they came from is a much better idea than it sounds, and the stone-skimming trophy going back to Easdale is worth the whole episode.

BBC Four is having the quietly best night on the schedule: an archaeology hour, then two episodes of Middlemarch, then an Arena about George Eliot. If you want to ignore everything else, that is the way to do it.
