The Baron opens the night at 12:25am (series 1, episode 14), followed by The Persuaders! from 1:25am and the reality strand Coast Guard Alaska from 2:25am. Six short Air Rescue instalments then fill the small hours from 3:10am to 5:50am across two different series runs, each block marked by a Good News on GREAT! Extra bulletin, before Teleshopping takes over from 6am to 9am.

The true-crime strand Murder Maps opens the morning proper at 9:10am, then the western epic The Charge of The Light Brigade fills the rest of the morning from 10:20am, split by a five-minute This Week Back Then bumper at 11:16am before resuming at 11:21am. The military drama repeats its 1pm outing (series 3, episode 6) to open the evening, following the black-ops team Dennis Haysbert’s character commands through a mission the channel has already shown once today.

Burn Notice — GREAT! Action, 7pm

Two episodes run back to back, series 6, episodes 2 and 3, the same pair shown in the early afternoon. Michael Westen, burned by his own agency and stuck doing odd jobs for Miami’s underworld while he tries to find out who ended his career, narrates his way through both.

Death Race 2000 — GREAT! Action, 9pm

Roger Corman’s 1975 cult favourite sends David Carradine’s Frankenstein and Sylvester Stallone’s Machine Gun Joe Viterbo across a dystopian America, scoring points for running down pedestrians in a race the government treats as national entertainment. The broadcast breaks for the regular five-minute This Week Back Then bumper at 9:56pm and picks back up at 10:01pm to finish out primetime.

The Avengers — GREAT! Action, 10:50pm

Patrick Macnee’s John Steed and Diana Rigg’s Emma Peel era of the show has passed by series 6; this later run pairs Steed with Linda Thorson’s Tara King instead, still trading on the same bowler-hat-and-catsuit mix of spy plot and dry wit.

The Baron — GREAT! Action, 11:50pm

Steve Forrest plays John Mannering, an antiques dealer moonlighting as an insurance investigator, in this mid-1960s adventure series adapted from John Creasey’s novels. It closes out the night on a lighter register than the war pictures and westerns that fill the channel’s daytime.

Classic westerns and action icons

The channel advertises itself as the home of John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren, and for once the marketing is accurate. Westerns from the 1930s to the 1960s take up most of the daylight hours, series as well as films, with Tombstone Territory and The High Chaparral in heavy rotation. After that come the 1980s and ’90s action vehicles, built around a small and very dependable cast list.

Contemporary action and thrillers

Evenings go harder on star names, usually one bigger studio picture with a leaner independent thriller either side of it. Most had a cinema release before they arrived here.

Anime, rescue documentaries and reality strands
