It started out as Sony Movies Action on 10 September 2019 and has been renamed twice since, most recently in March 2023. This Week Back Then and Sniper: Legacy open the day just after midnight, then NYC: Tornado Terror runs twice either side of a second This Week Back Then from 1:30am. Coast Guard Alaska takes the 3:30am slot (series 4, episode 6), followed by three Air Rescue instalments back to back from 4:25am to 5:50am, each break marked by a short Good News on GREAT! Extra bulletin. Teleshopping fills 6am to 9am.

Railway Murders holds the 9:10am slot (series 1, episode 4), Murder Maps follows at 10:20am (series 5, episode 9), and the western A Lawless Street runs from 11:20am into early afternoon. The Unit airs at 1pm (series 2, episode 23), then Burn Notice runs twice from 2pm (series 5, episodes 8 and 9), before Treacherous, a two-hour film, closes out the afternoon from 4pm ahead of tonight’s line-up below.

David Mamet’s CBS military drama gets a second outing tonight, having already run at 1pm today (series 2, episode 23).

Burn Notice — GREAT! Action, 7pm–8pm

Two episodes back to back, series five’s eighth and ninth, both repeats of their earlier 2pm and 3pm daytime airing. Jeffrey Donovan’s Michael Westen narration is still doing most of the work this far into the run.

The Equalizer — GREAT! Action, 9pm (broken by This Week Back Then, resumes 10:02pm)

The 1980s original rather than anything from the more recent film series. Edward Woodward’s Robert McCall comes out of retirement to help someone in trouble, running up against a Russian gang this time. A five-minute This Week Back Then interrupts at 9:57pm; the episode resumes at 10:02pm and runs through to almost 11:50pm.

The Avengers — GREAT! Action, 11:50pm

The 1960s spy series, not the Marvel one. By series six, Patrick Macnee’s John Steed is paired with Tara King rather than Emma Peel. A very late hour for something this dry and enjoyable.

What kind of films are on GREAT! Action

Classic westerns and action icons

The channel advertises itself as the home of John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren, and for once the marketing is accurate. Westerns from the 1930s to the 1960s take up most of the daylight hours, series as well as films, with Tombstone Territory and The High Chaparral in heavy rotation. After that come the 1980s and ’90s action vehicles, built around a small and very dependable cast list.

Contemporary action and thrillers

Evenings go harder on star names, usually one bigger studio picture with a leaner independent thriller either side of it. Most had a cinema release before they arrived here.

Anime, rescue documentaries and reality strands

Since around August 2024 the overnight hours have gone to things that are not films at all: Dragon Ball Super, and rescue documentaries such as Coast Guard Alaska and Air Rescue. The evening slots have so far been left alone.
