Quick Picks: Tonight’s Best

  • Play for Today: The Quiet Hour Channel 5, 9.05pm. Archie Panjabi as an NHS nurse.
  • Disco at the BBC BBC Four, from 9.15pm. Archive disco, then a documentary.
  • The Graham Norton Show BBC One, 10.40pm. Chan, Farrell, Tarantino, DeGeneres.
  • EastEnders is not on tonight. It returns Monday 19 October at 7.30pm on BBC One.

Early Evening

Sister Boniface Mysteries – BBC One, 2pm

A daytime one, for anyone at home. A poisoning at Felix and Victoria’s wedding rehearsal leaves Lorna Watson’s Sister Boniface with a guest list full of suspects, and the victim is the church cleaner.

Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing – Dave, 7pm

Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse head for Norfolk to try for a pike, which has so far beaten them on every trip. Nobody on television is better at doing very little for an hour. Dave then runs I’ll Get This at 7.40pm and Would I Lie to You? at 8.20pm, so you can stay put for the evening.

The Martian – Film4, 6.45pm

Matt Damon is left behind on Mars and has to science his way home, with Jessica Chastain in the cast and Ridley Scott directing. It is funnier than people remember, and the potato scenes are the best advert for botany ever made. Film4 follows it with The First Omen at 9.30pm.

Caribbean with Simon Reeve – Yesterday, 7pm

The last leg of Reeve’s journey takes him through Nicaragua and Honduras, before he finishes with young Jamaicans who have walked away from gang life. Yesterday has Canal Boat Diaries at 8pm if you want something gentler afterwards.

Prime Time

The Celebrity Traitors – BBC One, 8pm ⭐

This is episode six. The conspiracies start at breakfast, and one mistake on the mission could cost someone their place. A harmless task can leave a suspicion nobody shakes, and a celebrity cast is wonderfully bad at hiding anything.

Claudia Winkleman does the cloak-and-whisper act that has turned a parlour game into an event. The fun is in watching practised performers fumble the one thing they were never trained for, which is lying to each other’s faces.

Uncloaked follows at 9.05pm, with Ed Gamble going over the latest banishments and betrayals. Missed earlier episodes? Our guide to how to watch The Traitors in the UK explains where to catch up.

Gardeners’ World – BBC Two, 8pm

Frances Tophill works through the jobs for the autumn garden. Jamie Butterworth looks at plants that cope with shade, and Ashley Edwards meets the sound artist Jason Singh. A calm way to start a Friday night.

Emmerdale – ITV1, 8pm

The village soap is on at 8pm, with Coronation Street following at 8.30pm. If you are looking up what time Emmerdale is on tonight, that is the answer. Missed it? Both soaps go up on ITVX straight after broadcast.

Coronation Street – ITV1, 8.30pm

Yes, Coronation Street is on tonight, straight after Emmerdale. The ITV hour is followed by Beat the Chasers at 9pm, then the news at 10pm.

George Clarke’s Building Home – Channel 4, 8pm

Chris and Ellie bought a run-down bungalow in Lancashire’s Ribble Valley from George Clarke’s grandparents, then demolished it to build afresh. The budget panic is real, which is why it works. Channel 4 has Gogglebox at 9.05pm and The Last Leg afterwards.

Our Great Yorkshire Life – Channel 5, 8pm

Charlotte Bellamy, who plays Laurel in Emmerdale, goes panning for gold near Whitby, and the sheepdog trainer Carol Mellin gets her collies and Herdwicks ready for Skipton’s sale. A gentle regional series, and Channel 5 does these well.

Doc Martin – ITV3, 8pm

Two repeats back to back from Portwenn. The second, at 9pm, has a stomach bug sweeping through the village. On ITV3, Downton Abbey follows at 10pm.

Miss Marple – Drama, 8pm

A feature-length Agatha Christie adaptation. A newlywed from New Zealand is haunted by visions of a body in her new house, which makes for two hours of country-house menace. Drama follows it with New Tricks at 10pm.

Six Wives with Lucy Worsley – BBC Two, 9pm

The 2016 drama-documentary on Henry VIII’s queens is repeated, and tonight’s episode is about Anne Boleyn. Worsley is a lively guide, and the dramatised scenes stop it feeling like a lecture.

Death in Paradise – BBC Three, 9pm

Don Gilet’s DI Mervin Wilson investigates a poisoning during a production of The Tempest. Two other actors drank from the same bottle and were fine, which is the puzzle. It is a repeat of an episode first shown in February.

War – Sky Atlantic, 9pm

A divorce drama on a subscription channel. In this episode a prenup becomes the battleground.

Big Brother: Live Eviction – ITV2, 9pm

AJ Odudu and Will Best host the live eviction, running until 10.35pm. Eviction nights on ITV2 are noisy and quick, so there is no need to arrive early.

Play for Today: The Quiet Hour – Channel 5, 9.05pm

Archie Panjabi plays Riya, an overworked nurse who faces mounting emergencies and a near-fatal mistake. Paul Kaye is the combative amputee she has to deal with. Casting Kaye as a patient, away from his usual comic persona, is the clever bit, and two strong actors and an hour is a format that suits a one-off drama.

Disco at the BBC – BBC Four, from 9.15pm

BBC Four goes full glitterball. Disco at the BBC starts at 9.15pm with Chic, Rose Royce, Labelle and Village People, then Mark Radcliffe introduces a TOTP2 special on Donna Summer at 10.15pm. Disco: Soundtrack of a Revolution follows at 10.45pm and begins in 1970s New York. Top of the Pops repeats run earlier, from 7pm.

Have I Got News for You – BBC One, 9.30pm

Jason Manford hosts, Ian Hislop and Paul Merton captain the teams, and Janet Street-Porter is the guest panellist. It follows Uncloaked.

Late Night

The First Omen – Film4, 9.30pm

Nell Tiger Free stars in the prequel to the 1976 horror classic, as a young American novice sent to Rome who stumbles on a conspiracy inside the church. Certificate 18.

The Silence of the Lambs – BBC Two, 10pm

Jodie Foster’s Clarice Starling meets Anthony Hopkins’ Hannibal Lecter, and the cell conversations are still among the most unnerving scenes in mainstream cinema. Certificate 18. After it comes the odd comedy-horror In Fabric at 11.50pm, with Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Sidse Babett Knudsen.

The Last Leg – Channel 4, 10.05pm

Adam Hills, Josh Widdicombe and Alex Brooker have Tim Minchin and Ellie Taylor as guests. Minchin is a good fit for a late-night sofa, as quick with a joke as with a song.

The Graham Norton Show – BBC One, 10.40pm

Gemma Chan, Colin Farrell, Quentin Tarantino and Ellen DeGeneres share the sofa, Tarantino talks about his stage play, and Suede perform. RuPaul’s Drag Race UK follows at 11.30pm.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom – ITV1, 10.45pm

The second film in the Jurassic World series, with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard heading back to the island as a volcano threatens the dinosaurs. It is loud and daft, and happy to be.

On the rest of the dial, E4 has Free Guy with Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer at 8pm, More4 screens the detective series Coastal Unit at 9pm, Legend has The 13th Warrior at 9pm, 5USA runs NCIS from 6pm, and Talking Pictures TV shows the 1971 thriller Fright, with Susan George and Honor Blackman, at 9.05pm.

Sport

The day’s live sport sits mostly on subscription channels. Championship football has Burnley v Wolves on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football, with coverage from 7pm and kick-off at 8pm. Earlier, Australia v Samoa at the Women’s Rugby League World Cup is on Premier Sports 2 at 10am, and TNT Sports 3 has day three of the Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai, also at 10am. TV Radar Team is the byline on TV Radar's automatically generated TV guides — covering BBC One, BBC Two, ITV1, Channel 4, Channel 5 and beyond. Each evening's schedule is built from the published listings (titles, start times, run lengths and episode numbers) and checked against our listings data before publication, so you can decide in two minutes what to record and what to skip. These guides are generated automatically rather than written by hand; a human editor spot-checks them, but not every page is read before it goes live. Based in London, updated every day.
