Watch: What’s On TV Tonight

Early Evening

House of Games – BBC Two, 6pm

House of Games opens the week on BBC Two at 6pm, with Cheryl Baker, Rick Edwards, Toby Olubi and Lou Sanders playing the first game. It’s a quick, undemanding way to start the evening.

Hollyoaks – E4, 7pm

Tonight’s Hollyoaks on E4 at 7pm is a flashback episode that goes back in time to show how two villagers first became a couple. It’s a first-run episode, not a repeat. Our Hollyoaks page has the wider picture.

Cooking with the Stars – ITV1, 7.30pm

Cooking with the Stars on ITV1 at 7.30pm is barbecue week. Joey Essex, JB Gill and Lesley Joseph are each cooking to stay in the contest, with Emma Willis and Tom Allen hosting. Essex has a habit of being more watchable than skilful, which is why this format suits him.

EastEnders – BBC One, 7.30pm

Yes, EastEnders is on BBC One at 7.30pm tonight, in its usual Monday to Thursday slot. Cindy is home from honeymoon, with a surprise companion, while Kat keeps pushing for answers. Our soaps and big shows guide has the weekly pattern, and our EastEnders page covers the show.

Mastermind – BBC Two, 7.30pm

Mastermind is on BBC Two at 7.30pm with Clive Myrie asking the questions. The specialist subjects in this heat include Peep Show, Joni Mitchell and the Lake District. BBC Four goes in the opposite direction with a 1977 edition at 9pm.

Would I Lie to You? – Dave, 7.45pm

Dave shows Would I Lie to You? at 7.45pm, with Rob Brydon, Lee Mack and David Mitchell in outtakes that never made the broadcasts. A second episode follows at 8.20pm, and Dave has Have I Got a Bit More News for You at 9pm, with Steph McGovern hosting.

Prime Time

Emmerdale – ITV1, 8pm

Emmerdale is on ITV1 at 8pm. Liam whisks Cain off for a fishing trip ahead of his radiotherapy, Belle is given bad news, and Kim keeps her secret to herself. Our Emmerdale page has the backstory.

Midsomer Murders – ITV3, 8pm

Midsomer Murders fills two hours on ITV3 from 8pm. A young man turns up dead in a wartime-era motor, and the obvious explanation is self-harm. This being Midsomer, the obvious explanation won’t hold for long. Downton Abbey follows at 10pm. If you’d like another crime show, Drama has The Brokenwood Mysteries at 8pm.

Clickbait Clinic with Stacey Dooley – BBC One, 8.30pm

Clickbait Clinic with Stacey Dooley is on BBC One at 8.30pm, episode five of six. Dooley investigates a fabric colourant that online personalities promote as a brain booster, and the doctors she speaks to are alarmed. It’s a decent test of how far you should trust a video with a discount code attached.

Coronation Street – ITV1, 8.30pm

Coronation Street follows Emmerdale on ITV1 at 8.30pm. Sarah’s family and friends wait for the jury to return, Sam urges Nick to think again about his plans, and Daniel and Idris end up on opposite sides. Our Coronation Street page has the background.

The Party – ITV1, 9pm

The Party ends on ITV1 at 9pm with its fifth and final episode. Martin risks going to prison once more as the evidence against him builds, while Ben is fighting for his life. Luke Evans plays Martin and Tom Cullen plays Ben, in the drama based on Elizabeth Day’s novel. If you missed the earlier episodes, they’re on ITVX.

Death in Paradise – BBC One, 9pm

Death in Paradise on BBC One at 9pm is a repeat, not a new episode: it’s series 12 episode two, with Robert Webb guesting as a doomsday prepper. Someone from a survivalist commune dies in a sealed bunker, and Ralf Little’s Neville has a run of adventurous dates on the side. In Wales it’s on BBC Two at 9pm instead.

Aberfan: The Village That Fought Back – BBC Two, 9pm ⭐

Aberfan: The Village That Fought Back, on BBC Two at 9pm (BBC One in Wales), is my pick, and a serious one. On 21 October 1966 a colliery spoil tip collapsed onto the Welsh mining village of Aberfan, killing 144 people, 116 of them children. That was 60 years ago this Wednesday.

This film is about what came after. The community stood up to the government, pressing for justice and for the dangerous tips above the village to be cleared. It matters because the disaster wasn’t only a tragedy. It was a failure that people had warned about, and the fight to be heard went on for years.

It’s not an easy hour, and it’s meant to stay with you. In Wales, BBC One follows it at 10.40pm with Unseen: The Aberfan Portraits, with Have I Got News for You moved to 10.55pm. BBC Four shows the 2016 film poem Aberfan: The Green Hollow at 10pm. It’s on iPlayer too.

Pierre – Channel 4, 9pm

Pierre reaches episode three of six on Channel 4 at 9pm. Pierre can’t get Michael’s video footage out of his head, and Ronnie tells him to hand it to the police, though something about the footage has clearly unsettled Ronnie too. David Harewood is excellent as the duty solicitor.

Major Crimes Unit – Channel 5, 9pm

Major Crimes Unit on Channel 5 at 9pm follows a Birmingham case in which six men with machetes surround a car and bundle the driver into the boot. With almost nothing to go on, the West Midlands Major Crime Team pieces the attack together using CCTV, phone data, bank records and forensic work. It runs for 90 minutes, with Forensics: Murder Scene after it at 10.30pm.

Sam Lovegrove: Race Mechanic – Quest, 9pm

Sam Lovegrove: Race Mechanic starts a new series on Quest at 9pm, with Lovegrove getting cars and bikes ready for big British motorsport events. In the first episode he gets a Lotus Elise ready to tackle Gurston Down. Yesterday has Tribe with Bruce Parry at the same hour.

Our Farm Next Door: Amanda, Clive and Kids – More4, 9pm

Our Farm Next Door: Amanda, Clive and Kids begins its latest series on More4 at 9pm. The opener has unusual decorating that uses gallons of tea, and the family rescue a pregnant sheep that’s stuck on a hill. It’s gentle, muddy viewing, and the sheep is the main event.

Shaun of the Dead – Film4, 9pm

Shaun of the Dead is on Film4 at 9pm, with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as two flatmates who fight a zombie outbreak in London, mainly to rescue Shaun’s mum and his ex. Edgar Wright’s 2004 comedy is still one of the best British films of its decade, and the record choices are the funniest thing in it. Film4 follows at 10.55pm with John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China, and BBC Two has Selma at 11.05pm.

The Taking of Pelham 123 – Legend, 9pm

Legend shows The Taking of Pelham 123 at 9pm. Denzel Washington and John Travolta star in Tony Scott’s 2009 version, in which criminals take a New York subway train hostage for a $10 million ransom. It isn’t subtle, but it has pace, and Legend gives it a long slot, and Talking Pictures TV has French Connection II with Gene Hackman at 9.50pm.

Big Brother – ITV2, 9pm

Big Brother is on ITV2 at 9pm, the nightly instalment from the house, with a public vote hanging over the least popular housemates. It’s followed at 10pm by The Group Chat, hosted by Kate Lawler and GK Barry. Earlier, ITV2 has Ant and Dec’s Limitless Win at 7pm.

Late Night

Have I Got News for You – BBC One, 10.40pm

Have I Got News for You is on BBC One at 10.40pm (10.55pm in Wales), episode three of ten. Jason Manford hosts, with Janet Street-Porter and Zoe Lyons as guests.

The Real Unforgotten – ITV1, 10.45pm

The Real Unforgotten is on ITV1 from 10.45pm, and both halves of the two-part series are on tonight. Detectives reopen the 1981 murder of shopkeeper Carol Morgan, who was killed in the storeroom of her shop, and find two possible suspects. Times can vary by region, so check your ITV1 listing.

Big Trouble in Little China – Film4, 10.55pm

Big Trouble in Little China is on Film4 at 10.55pm. Kurt Russell is a truck driver who ends up in a fight with a sorcerer beneath San Francisco’s Chinatown, with Kim Cattrall in the cast. It’s a daft, enjoyable 1986 film that runs to two hours.
