Page Contents

Quick Picks: Tonight’s Best

  • Strictly Come Dancing BBC One, 6.15pm. Live, and running to 8.35pm.
  • The Voice UK ITV1, 8.35pm. The Battles begin.
  • Marble Hall Murders BBC One, 9.20pm. Episode three of six.
  • Poor Things Channel 4, 10pm. Emma Stone’s Oscar-winning role.
  • EastEnders is not on tonight. It returns Monday at 7.30pm.

Early Evening

The Celebrity Inner Circle – BBC One, 5.30pm

Episode five of eight. Luca Bish, Josh Jones and Sanjeev Kohli are among the famous faces paired with contestants, advising them while everyone tries to work out who is bluffing. A gentle warm-up for Strictly.

The Great Escape – BBC Two, 5.55pm

The 1963 prisoner-of-war classic is on from 5.55pm, with Steve McQueen, James Garner and Richard Attenborough planning a mass breakout from a Nazi camp. McQueen’s motorbike jump is still the bit everyone remembers. It’s the archetypal Saturday-afternoon film.

F1 Singapore GP Sprint Race and Qualifying Highlights – Channel 4, 6pm

Channel 4 has the Sprint and qualifying highlights from Marina Bay at 6pm, a tight, humid circuit. It’s highlights rather than live, so stay off your phone if you want the results fresh. Sunday’s race decides the weekend.

Blue Planet II – Yesterday, 6pm

Episode four, Big Blue, looks at life far from land, with baby turtles riding on debris and sperm whales hunting squid in the deep. David Attenborough narrates, and it holds up well on Yesterday. Really has three Repair Shop episodes from 6pm, and Quest repeats the series at 9pm.

Midsomer Murders – ITV3, 6.10pm

ITV3 opens with Sauce for the Goose, a murder at a family-run relish factory, with John Nettles as Barnaby and Jason Hughes as Sergeant Scott. A second episode follows two hours later, and Vera takes the 10.10pm slot. If you want comfort comedy, Dave has Ghosts from 7pm and Not Going Out from 9pm.

The Chase Celebrity Special – ITV1, 6.30pm

Bradley Walsh hosts, with Richard Bacon, Daisy Arwen Campbell, Neil Jones and Gary Wilmot playing for their charities. Neil Jones is a Strictly professional, so watching him take on a Chaser is a small treat. Win Win with Postcode Lottery follows at 7.30pm.

Mrs Harris Goes to Paris – Film4, 6.40pm

Lesley Manville plays a 1950s London cleaner who saves for years to buy a Dior dress, then crosses the Channel to collect it. It’s sweet and old-fashioned, and Manville is lovely in it. Film4 saves the harder stuff for later, with Wrath of Man at 9pm.

Prime Time

Strictly Come Dancing – BBC One, 6.15pm ⭐

This is the one to watch tonight. Series 24 is on episode five, the early nerves have gone and the couples are starting to take risks. The judges are Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Shirley Ballas and Anton Du Beke, and Emma Willis, Josh Widdicombe and Johannes Radebe share hosting duties.

It runs until 8.35pm, a long stretch even for a Saturday. If you only watch one thing tonight, make it this, then catch up on the gossip when Gogglebox turns up later.

Porridge: 50 Years of Laughs – Channel 5, 7pm

A tribute to the Ronnie Barker prison sitcom, with clips, the spin-offs and a parade of fans. Fletcher and Godber are one of British TV’s great double acts. Easy viewing if you want an hour away from the sequins.

A Few Good Men – Channel 4, 7.30pm

Rob Reiner’s 1992 courtroom drama has Tom Cruise as a young navy lawyer, Demi Moore as his co-counsel and Jack Nicholson as the colonel everyone remembers. Aaron Sorkin wrote it, so the talk is sharp and a little too neat. It runs until 10pm, when Poor Things takes over.

The Voice UK – ITV1, 8.35pm

Series 14, episode seven, and the Battles begin. Emma Willis hosts, and will.i.am, Sir Tom Jones, Kelly Rowland, Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones put their acts head to head, with guest mentors helping out. This is where the show gets harder, because someone you’ve warmed to will go home.

Wisdom of the Crowd – BBC One, 8.35pm

John Bishop hosts episode four of eight, in which one contestant tries to beat a studio crowd’s collective guesses. Tonight’s prize pot has £30,000 in it and a question about how often Britons shower. Light viewing after a long dance show.

Buckingham Palace: A Year in the Life – Channel 5, 8.35pm

The fourth and final episode covers autumn: guest suites being prepared, state banquet menus and the planning behind royal events. It closes the series. Tom Cruise in The Firm follows at 10.05pm.

Forty Hits of 1976 at the BBC – BBC Two, 8.40pm

Forty hits from 1976, taken from the BBC archive. ABBA had three UK number ones that year, so it’s no surprise they get a compilation of their own at 11.10pm.

Marble Hall Murders – BBC One, 9.20pm

Episode three of six. Lesley Manville’s Susan Ryeland is still caught between the Crace family mystery and the Atticus Pünd story she is editing. Jamie Blackley’s Eliot Crace is unravelling and begins accusing his family of murder, while Pünd edges towards a suspect. Pay attention to the small details.

Wrath of Man – Film4, 9pm

Guy Ritchie reunites with Jason Statham for a heist thriller in which a security firm keeps being targeted and its mysterious new guard may know why. Statham barely smiles, which suits the film. Elsewhere, Legend has Steven Seagal in The Foreigner, 5Action has Liam Neeson in Cold Pursuit and 5Star has Vin Diesel in Pitch Black, all at 9pm. GREAT! Action has Clint Eastwood in High Plains Drifter, and GREAT! Movies has Agent Game at 9.14pm.

The Arctic Convoy – BBC Four, 9pm

A 2023 Norwegian war film inspired by Convoy PQ 17 in 1942, when merchant ships sailed to supply the Soviet Union. In July that year the convoy was ordered to scatter, and only 11 of its 35 ships reached port. The film follows one cargo ship that sails on regardless, with its captain and first mate at odds. Earlier on BBC Four, Simon King’s Shetland Adventure ends its run at 7pm and a pangolin documentary follows at 8pm. To the Manor Born is on at 10.40pm.

Wallander – Drama, 9pm

Series four opens with The White Lioness, in which Kenneth Branagh’s Kurt Wallander goes to Cape Town after a Swedish woman disappears. It’s grim, handsomely shot and slower than most crime drama now. Drama has The Brokenwood Mysteries at 7pm. For classic films, Talking Pictures TV has Beryl Reid in The Killing of Sister George at 9.05pm, and Blaze has the new Shadow Man at 9pm.

Johnny Cash: Live At Montreux – Sky Arts, 7pm

Sky Arts has a music evening, starting with Johnny Cash at the 1994 Montreux festival. Expect Folsom Prison Blues and the rest of the greatest hits. A documentary on Cash’s relationship with Britain follows, then Cream’s reunion at the Royal Albert Hall at 9.25pm. Good news for anyone who prefers guitars to sequins.

Celebrity Gogglebox – E4, 9pm

Series two, episode five, with the celebrities reacting to everything from 127 Hours to Cape Fear. The regular Gogglebox is at 10pm. Elsewhere, More4 has 24 Hours in A&E, 4seven has Grand Designs and That’s TV has Benidorm, all at 9pm. GREAT! TV has the new Empire at 8pm and 5USA has NCIS: Los Angeles on all evening.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two – ITV2, 8pm

The 2011 finale is on ITV2 at 8pm, preceded by Part One at 6.25pm. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint finish the story with the battle for Hogwarts. You’ll want to have seen Part One first.

Late Night

Romesh Ranganathan’s Parents’ Evening – ITV1, 9.45pm

Romesh hosts series two, episode six, with Josh Widdicombe, Motsi Mabuse and Larry and George Lamb competing for charity. Widdicombe and Mabuse are both tied to Strictly in their day jobs, so it’s a busy Saturday for them. English Football League Highlights are on ITV1 at 11.05pm.

Match of the Day – BBC One, 10.30pm

Match of the Day has Arsenal v Leeds at the Emirates and Manchester United v Tottenham among six Premier League games. It runs until 11.50pm, when the film Bones and All starts. ITV4 has English Football League Highlights at 9pm and Rocky IV at 10.30pm.

Poor Things – Channel 4, 10pm

Yorgos Lanthimos’s 2023 film (rated 18) stars Emma Stone as Bella Baxter, a Victorian woman revived by an unorthodox scientist, played by Willem Dafoe, and given an infant’s brain. Stone won the Best Actress Oscar for it, and Lanthimos had directed her before in The Favourite. It’s odd, funny and hard to shake. Film4 has Red Rooms at 11.20pm for something much darker.

Sport

Match of the Day is on BBC One at 10.30pm, and Channel 4 has Formula 1 Sprint and qualifying highlights from Singapore at 6pm. Football League highlights are on ITV4 at 9pm and ITV1 at 11.05pm. Pay-TV has Manchester United v Tottenham on Sky Sports with a 5.30pm kick-off, and Arsenal v Leeds earlier on TNT Sports at 12.30pm. The first Bledisloe Cup Test, New Zealand v Australia at Eden Park, kicked off at 7.10am UK time.

TV Radar Team

TV Radar Team is the byline on TV Radar's automatically generated TV guides — covering BBC One, BBC Two, ITV1, Channel 4, Channel 5 and beyond. Each evening's schedule is built from the published listings (titles, start times, run lengths and episode numbers) and checked against our listings data before publication, so you can decide in two minutes what to record and what to skip. These guides are generated automatically rather than written by hand; a human editor spot-checks them, but not every page is read before it goes live. Based in London, updated every day.
