It’s an early episode, so the age range on stage tends to swing wide — teenagers up against singers decades into their working lives, all judged on nothing but the sound coming out of them. That’s still the best bit of any series like this: no faces, no backstory, just four famous chairs turning or not. Early weeks are usually kinder to the format than the later ones.

Last Night of the Proms – BBC Two, 7.10pm

The first half of the night’s big event, and Sakari Oramo’s got a packed programme to get through before the interval: Loesser, Barber and Bernstein between them cover 250 years of American music, there are two freshly written pieces — one by Samy Moussa, one by Anne Dudley — and a detour into Smetana and Dvořák. Pianist Yuja Wang takes on Barber’s Piano Concerto and a jazz suite by Alexander Tsfasman, while tenor Nicky Spence covers Scottish song, a Rusalka aria and, because why not, a number from Guys and Dolls. It’s a lot to fit in, and that’s before the second half even starts.

Today at the Test: England v Pakistan – BBC Four, 7pm

Highlights of day four at Edgbaston, assuming there’s still a match to show highlights of — the third and final Test has been on a tight schedule, and these things have a habit of finishing early once one side gets on top.

Golf: Solheim Cup 2026 – BBC Four, 8pm

An hour of highlights from day two’s foursomes and fourballs, Europe against the USA, after Sky Sports carried the whole thing live from early morning.

Prime Time

Last Night of the Proms: The Finale – BBC One, 9pm ⭐

This is Sakari Oramo’s seventh time conducting the Last Night, which makes him about as safe a pair of hands as the job gets these days. The BBC One half is where the whole thing tips over into pure ceremony: the concert wraps up its remaining pieces, and then comes the annual singalong, flags out in the hall and, going on past years, on sofas across the country too.

It’s easy to be sniffy about the flag-waving bit, and plenty of people are every year, but the actual music on the way there is often the best of the whole eight-week Proms season, not the throwaway finale people assume it is. Oramo’s been doing this long enough now that the transitions between the daft bits and the serious bits feel completely natural, which is harder to pull off than it looks. If you only watch one night of Proms coverage all summer, this is usually the one worth catching, and BBC One carries the whole thing live before Match of the Day rounds off the night.

Avengers: Endgame – Channel 4, 8.15pm

The one that was supposed to wrap everything up, back in 2019, before Marvel discovered that “Endgame” was more of a suggestion than a plan. The surviving Avengers — Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, the Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye among them — spend three hours working out a way to undo Thanos’s snap, which mostly involves a lot of time travel and a fair bit of revisiting earlier films in the series. It’s long, there’s a good 40 minutes that could have gone, and the final battle goes on well past the point it needed to. None of that stops it landing when it needs to. Channel 4 clears most of the evening for it.

The Box – ITV1, 8.15pm

Gary Lineker’s game show has reached the Oxford Union for tonight’s round, and the format’s shifted from physical stunts to something closer to a debate club with consequences: the remaining celebrities argue random topics head to head, with the loser one step closer to going home. Two are already out, so the tension among the survivors is presumably ratcheting up. Whether the show has legs beyond a novelty run is still the open question, but the head-to-head structure at least gives it somewhere to go each week that isn’t just another pod.

The Celebrity Inner Circle – BBC One, 8.15pm

Amanda Holden’s first go at hosting a game show entirely on her own, after years of doing it alongside someone else on one judging panel or another. Five contestants are each handed a secret amount of money and have to work out who’s holding what, eliminating people as they go, with the two who make the final round choosing between splitting the pot or trying to take it all. There’s a definite whiff of Traitors-style paranoia running through it, and it moves along faster than the premise suggests on paper. Head to head with The Box in the same slot, this is the less physical, more scheming of the two.

The Royal Rich List 2026 – Channel 5, 8.15pm

A rundown of the ten wealthiest royals, with the Firm’s collective assets put at somewhere around £21 billion. Most of the actual figures are informed guesswork rather than anything official, and the programme is upfront about that, walking through how the estimates get made rather than pretending they’re gospel.

Radio 2 in the Park 2026: Saturday Highlights – BBC Two, 9pm

An hour of the best bits from Stirling’s City Park before Chaka Khan gets her full set at 10pm, taking in ABC, Lulu, Emeli Sandé and Texas along the way. Festival highlights shows live or die on the editing, and this one’s got enough acts to fill the hour without it feeling rushed.

Beck – BBC Four, 9pm

A properly grim case tonight: a gang boss’s feud spills into open violence on the streets of Stockholm, and it’s Martin Beck’s grandson Vilhelm who ends up pulled into the story, fixated on a masked vigilante operating somewhere in the middle of it all. The show’s more than two decades old at this point and it shows in the pacing, which is deliberately slow even by Scandi-drama standards. That won’t bother anyone who’s stuck with it this long, and it’s not really designed to win new fans at episode however-many. BBC Four has the whole run on iPlayer if you want to catch up first.

Celebrity Gogglebox – E4, 9pm

An hour of famous faces reacting to the week’s telly, warming up for the regular Gogglebox households at 10pm on E4.

Whether the UK version ever quite nails the loose, anything-can-happen energy of the original is a fair question, but a host as game as Goldblum tends to paper over most of the rough edges.
