Watch: What’s On TV Tonight

Early Evening

Countryfile – BBC One, 5.40pm

Anita Rani and Sean Fletcher are in the South Pennines this week. It’s the usual mix of landscape and people in wellies, and Sunday teatime on BBC One has been built around it for years.

Next Goal Wins – Film4, 6pm

Taika Waititi’s football comedy about the American Samoa national side, once famous for the worst results in international football. It’s gentle and daft with a good heart, and Michael Fassbender is on form as the coach nobody wants. Film4 follows it with Gran Turismo at 8pm.

Blue Murder Motel – ITV3, 6.05pm

Two retired detectives running a motel in New Zealand, with episodes three and four back to back on ITV3. It’s undemanding and sunny, which is no bad thing in October, and Midsomer Murders follows at 8.05pm.

The Reluctant Vampire – BBC One, 6.40pm

Episode two of six, with Lenny Rush as Val, a boy who would rather not be a vampire at all. This week he can’t resist exploring human life and wanders into the village. Rush has a gift for looking permanently let down by the adults around him, and that’s what carries it. Early-evening comedy aimed at everyone on the sofa is rare.

The Box – ITV1, 7pm

It is the final: the last three contestants go through a pair of puzzle rounds and a head-to-head before a winner is named. I can’t claim to love the show, but a final is a final, and it fills the hour before the soaps.

Grosvenor House: London’s Grand Hotel – Channel 5, 7pm

The history of the Park Lane hotel that opened in 1929. Walt Disney and Sean Connery both stayed, and the amenities ran to Turkish baths and an ice rink. A decent counter-programming choice on Channel 5 if soap-and-quiz Sunday isn’t your thing.

Strictly Come Dancing: The Results – BBC One, 7.10pm

The results show, so one dance-off and a lot of nervous sitting about. The scores are in, the public have had their say, and the judges choose between two couples. The wait for the verdict has always been the weak spot of the format, but the dance-off is where the show wakes up. Next week is icons week. It runs 50 minutes, then Antiques Roadshow takes over at 8pm. Our Strictly guide explains how to catch up.

Eva Longoria: Searching for France – BBC Two, 7.20pm

This week it’s Bordeaux, so wine, plus caviar, beef and duck in Bordelaise sauce. Eva Longoria is good company and she lets the winemakers talk, which is the right call. Forty pleasant minutes.

BBC Young Musician 2026 – BBC Four, 7.30pm

Petroc Trelawny hosts the second night of live auditions, with young classical players trying to reach the next round of the competition. This is where you find people you will hear about for years. BBC Four has A Stitch in Time at 7pm first.

Celebrity Pottery Throw Down – Channel 4, 7.45pm

The series ends tonight, with Keith Brymer Jones and Rich Miller on judging duty. Keith’s tears are a legitimate weather system by now. Channel 4 also has F1 highlights from the Singapore Grand Prix at 5.30pm, and Apocalypse at 9pm.

Prime Time

Antiques Roadshow – BBC One, 8pm

The roadshow is at Dartington Estate in Devon, with a Rolex that nearly went in the bin and a cane hiding something. The format is the same as ever: someone brings in something from the loft, and it turns out to be worth a car. A steady hour before the heavy stuff at 9pm.

Gran Turismo – Film4, 8pm

The 2023 film about a young gamer who wins a place on a racing programme and ends up in a real car. Archie Madekwe leads, with Orlando Bloom and David Harbour in support. It’s glossy, a bit corny and quite good fun at 200mph. T2 Trainspotting follows at 10.40pm.

Emmerdale – ITV1, 8pm

Emmerdale is on at 8pm tonight, and Coronation Street follows at 8.30pm. Both are on tonight, so if you assumed Sunday was a soap-free zone, it isn’t this week.

Coronation Street – ITV1, 8.30pm

Half an hour of Weatherfield at 8.30pm, straight after Emmerdale. The weekly soap schedule is covered in our soaps guide.

Time – BBC One, 9pm ⭐

This is the one to watch. Jimmy McGovern and Samuel Bailey’s prison drama returns for a third series, this time inside a young offender institution, a different and arguably harder place to be. David Tennant plays prison officer Bailey. Siobhan Finneran returns as chaplain Marie-Louise O’Dell, with Vinette Robinson and Jo Joyner in the cast and a crowd of young actors playing the offenders, many in their screen debuts.

McGovern doesn’t do comfort, and series three looks at what locking up teenagers does to them and to the adults who look after them. There are three hour-long episodes.

The Party – ITV1, 9pm

A new five-part adaptation of Elizabeth Day’s 2017 novel. Tom Cullen plays Ben Fitzmaurice and Luke Evans plays his lifelong friend Martin Gilmour. Sarah Solemani is Lucy and Lydia Leonard is Serena. In the first episode Ben’s birthday bash is thrown into chaos by an unexpected announcement, and Martin urges him not to react rashly. Episode two is tomorrow at 9pm, and the first episode is repeated at 11.40pm for anyone who clashed it with Time.

Wilderness with Simon Reeve – BBC Two, 9pm

Simon Reeve heads into Canada’s Yukon on foot and by canoe, hunting for grizzlies and meeting the locals. He’s the best travel presenter on British television at making enormous landscapes feel lived in. A calmer alternative to the two big dramas.

Big Brother – ITV2, 9pm

New episode on ITV2 at 9pm, with Big Brother: The Group Chat at 10pm. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is on earlier, at 7.25pm.

Silent Witness – Drama, 9pm

Drama has Silent Witness at 9pm, with Sister Boniface Mysteries before it at 8pm and New Tricks after at 11.20pm. It’s a good, long evening of British crime for anyone who has had enough of this week’s new dramas.

Apocalypse: Could You Survive? – Channel 4, 9pm

A new episode of the survival experiment, this week with a battle of the sexes and some cereal wars. Daft and compulsive, and the faction politics are the whole appeal. Gogglebox is on E4 at 9pm and Channel 4 at 10.15pm.

Live: NFL on 5: San Francisco 49ers @ Seattle Seahawks – Channel 5, 9pm

Live NFL on Channel 5 from 9pm, after the Eagles v Jaguars London game earlier in the afternoon. 5Action has Raiders @ Patriots from 5.30pm.

More on the dial at 8 to 9pm: Dave has Wagging Rights at 8pm and Have I Got a Bit More News for You at 9pm, 5USA has a Columbo at 8pm, Quest is on a Repair Shop run, Yesterday has Bangers & Cash at 9pm, Really has Long Lost Family at 9pm, More4 has 999: On the Front Line at 9pm, Legend has Gods of Egypt at 9pm, ITV4 has RoboCop 2 at 9.30pm, GREAT! Movies has Zulu Dawn at 9.06pm, Sky Arts has Bob Marley: Uprising! Live at 7.45pm, and Talking Pictures TV has Dial 999 at 8.35pm.

Late Night

Later… with Jools Holland – BBC Two, 10pm

Series 69 opens with Johnny Marr and Paul Heaton, plus Skye Newman, Mary in the Junkyard, DC3 and Dermot Henry, who all make their TV debuts. Heaton is there on the back of his first UK Number One solo album, and Marr talks about his new record. Eclectic by design, so someone will be a surprise. Don’t Look Now follows at 10.45pm.

Top Girls – BBC Four, 10.15pm

The 1991 TV version of Caryl Churchill’s 1982 play, with Deborah Findlay, Lesley Sharp and Lesley Manville. It’s a clever, overlapping piece of theatre about women and ambition, and Manville introduces it at 10pm.

Match of the Day – BBC One, 10.30pm

Highlights of three Premier League games, including Liverpool v Man City at Anfield. The Nice Guys follows at 11.35pm.

T2 Trainspotting – Film4, 10.40pm

Danny Boyle’s 2017 sequel, which brings Renton, Sick Boy, Spud and Begbie back to Edinburgh twenty years on. It’s rated 18 and it earns it.

Sport

The Singapore Grand Prix race is live on Sky Sports F1 at 1pm, and Channel 4 has free-to-air highlights at 5.30pm. Liverpool host Manchester City at Anfield, with a 4.30pm kick-off on Sky Sports and the highlights on Match of the Day at 10.30pm (see our Premier League guide). Day three of South Africa v Australia in Durban is on Sky Sports Cricket. The Eagles v Jaguars NFL game from Tottenham kicks off at 2.30pm and is live on Channel 5 from 2pm as well as on Sky Sports NFL, and Channel 5 has the 49ers at the Seahawks at 9pm.
