Watch: What’s On TV Tonight

Early Evening

Sam and Ade Go Birding – Channel 5, 7pm

Samuel West and Adrian Edmondson are at Bempton Cliffs in the East Riding, which has the biggest seabird colony in England, and Ade wants to spot a puffin. Neither presenter pretends to be an authority, which is the joke and also the charm: two men with binoculars and no real plan, noticing things. West is back on this channel at 9.05pm in All Creatures Great and Small, so Thursday is his night.

Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing – Dave, 7pm

Paul Whitehouse and Bob Mortimer go to the River Lea, Paul’s boyhood perch-fishing spot, and Feargal Sharkey comes along. Sharkey has spent years campaigning about the state of English rivers, so the chat should wander from nostalgia to something sharper. Dave then goes into Would I Lie to You? at 7.40pm and 8.20pm, QI XL at 9pm and Have I Got a Bit More News for You at 10pm.

EastEnders – BBC One, 7.30pm

Yes, it is on. Thursday is the last EastEnders of the week, so the next episode is Monday 19 October. Kat and Alfie’s argument carries over from earlier in the week and their relationship is on thin ice by the time a frantic hunt starts. Our guide to when the soaps and big shows are on has the weekly pattern if you lose track of the nights.

How to Stay Fit as You Age: Tonight – ITV1, 7.30pm

Paul Brand asks if it is too late to take up exercise. It is a half-hour for anyone who has been told they are past it, and ITV1 goes straight into Emmerdale afterwards.

Prime Time

The Celebrity Traitors – BBC One, 8pm ⭐

Episode five, and by now the castle has stopped being polite. Claudia Winkleman presides over a cast of 21 that includes Michael Sheen, Miranda Hart, Richard E Grant, Maya Jama, Romesh Ranganathan, Bella Ramsey and Joe Lycett. Tonight’s mission is built around death, and the round table afterwards is tense and bad-tempered as the faithful go after another suspected traitor.

The format works because nobody, however famous, is much good at lying across a table to people they have been sharing a house with. Trained performers may be worse, because they think they are convincing. Every accusation also lands on someone with a public image to protect.

Uncloaked follows at 9.05pm, with Ed Gamble talking to the players sent home or killed off in episode five, who then learn the Traitors’ identities. If you only watch one thing tonight, make it this hour. Our guide to watching The Traitors has the viewing details.

The Yorkshire Vet – Channel 5, 8pm

Peter Wright fights to save a lamb born with a defect, Shona Searson treats a poorly shire horse and Rohin Aojula finds a pheasant struck by a car. Lambing is a spring job in most of the Dales, so a newborn in October is a little unusual in itself. It is the gentlest hour of the night, and Channel 5 follows it with All Creatures Great and Small.

Bangers and Cash: Restoring Classics – Yesterday, 8pm

This week’s restorers have a 1965 Cortina estate with a colourful back story and an 1980s Austin Morris Max to sort out. The shop-floor detail is the appeal. Yesterday follows at 9pm with Dream Car Fixers, which chases a Mark 1 Ford Capri.

Emmerdale – ITV1, 8pm

Cain does not trust what Sadie is after, and anyone who has watched Cain Dingle distrust a motive knows how that tends to go. Our Emmerdale page has the background if you have lost the thread, and Coronation Street follows on the same channel at 8.30pm.

Classic Movies: The Story of A Matter of Life and Death – Sky Arts, 8pm

Ian Nathan looks at Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s 1946 film, with David Niven as an airman who should have died and Kim Hunter as the American radio operator he falls for. Roger Livesey, as the doctor who argues the airman’s case, is the other pleasure, and the switch between colour and monochrome still looks inventive. Sky Arts follows at 9pm with Three Days of the Condor.

The Great Escape – BBC Four, 8pm

John Sturges’s 1963 prisoner-of-war film has Steve McQueen, James Garner and Richard Attenborough, and it is as much fun on the fifteenth viewing as the first. The tunnelling plot is plain and tense, and the cast do their best work in the gaps between the action. It runs to nearly three hours with the breaks, so settle in. BBC Four is making a Donald Sutherland night of it, with Don’t Look Now at 10.45pm and an interview with the actor by Mark Cousins afterwards at 12.30am.

Vera – ITV3, 8pm

Brenda Blethyn’s Vera Stanhope looks into a raid on a port that had help from the inside. ITV3 has Downton Abbey at 10pm and DCI Banks at 11pm after it.

Coronation Street – ITV1, 8.30pm

Tyrone gets Todd to agree to give evidence in court. That is all the detail there is for this episode, so go in cold. Our Coronation Street page has the background.

Wrath of Man – Film4, 9pm

Guy Ritchie’s 2021 crime thriller has Jason Statham as a new security guard who turns out to be far more capable than his colleagues expected. It is chaptered, slow-burning and then violent, and Statham is at his most economical. Film4 opened the night at 6.30pm with Hidden Figures and ends with Earth Mama at 11.20pm. Certificate 15.

Three Days of the Condor – Sky Arts, 9pm

Robert Redford plays a CIA researcher who pops out for lunch and comes back to find his colleagues dead, and Faye Dunaway is the stranger who ends up sheltering him. Sydney Pollack’s 1975 thriller turns on paranoia and the sense that whoever is helping you may be the one who sold you out. Max von Sydow turns up as a quietly chilling hired killer. Certificate 15.

All Creatures Great and Small – Channel 5, 9.05pm

Tristan dresses up for one last date with Charlotte, Siegfried’s rat Bunthorne goes missing and worries Jimmy, and James and Richard butt heads. Nicholas Ralph is James, Callum Woodhouse is Tristan, Samuel West is Siegfried, the same Samuel West who was on the cliffs at 7pm, and Anna Madeley is Mrs Hall. A behind-the-scenes episode with Rachel Shenton and Nicholas Ralph follows at 10pm.

Taskmaster – Channel 4, 9.05pm

Greg Davies and Alex Horne are back in the studio with Richard Ayoade, Nina Conti, Chloe Petts, Isy Suttie and Matt Lucas. A past contestant drops in on the house unannounced, Isy Suttie is rude to a railway guard and Nina Conti tries a banana-and-spoon scheme on Greg. The show works best when a competitor misreads a task and commits to the mistake with total conviction, so Ayoade is ideal casting.

Not Going Out – BBC One, 9.30pm

Lee Mack and Sally Bretton are back as Lee and Lucy, who ask two churchgoers round to referee an argument about money. Lucy Beaumont and Amy Gledhill guest star, and two comedians as churchgoers is the kind of casting that gets a laugh before they open their mouths.

Late Night

Break Clause – Channel 4, 10.05pm

The series finale is shown as two episodes back to back, at 10.05pm and 10.35pm. Samuel Bottomley and Lara Ricote play Ben and Lil, who skive off for a day in London, where Ben hears some uncomfortable things about why Lil moved. By the second episode the flat is about to be handed back, with Lil heading for Berlin and Ben bound for Frances’s sofa. It follows Taskmaster neatly.

Don’t Look Now – BBC Four, 10.45pm

Nicolas Roeg’s 1973 supernatural thriller has Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie as a couple grieving a daughter in a damp, half-empty Venice. Roeg cuts the film like a nightmare, and the red coat and the ending have been argued over for fifty years. Certificate 15.

TV Radar Team is the byline on TV Radar's automatically generated TV guides — covering BBC One, BBC Two, ITV1, Channel 4, Channel 5 and beyond. Each evening's schedule is built from the published listings (titles, start times, run lengths and episode numbers) and checked against our listings data before publication, so you can decide in two minutes what to record and what to skip. These guides are generated automatically rather than written by hand; a human editor spot-checks them, but not every page is read before it goes live. Based in London, updated every day.
