A two-hour case on ITV3 tonight, with Vera working a Northumberland enquiry that’s been left to go cold for weeks before a fresh lead drags it back open.

70 Up – ITV1, 9pm ⭐

This is the one that matters tonight. The final instalment of the Up series, following the same group of Britons every seven years since they were small children in 1964, and it’s finished under sadder circumstances than any previous chapter — director Michael Apted died before he could complete it, leaving Asif Kapadia to bring it home.

At 70, most of the original group are retired, which makes this outing more reflective than usual; old regrets get an airing that younger versions of these people wouldn’t have allowed. The obvious dog jokes get out of the way fast: the surviving cooks split into teams to feed 50 guests with a dog-themed starter and pudding, one of which is moulded into a bone shape. Round two sends them chasing a memory instead of a punchline, cooking whatever dish instantly takes them back to a favourite holiday, and trying to convince Grace Dent and Giorgio Locatelli they’re tasting it too. Mass catering week is where this competition usually loses someone.

Emergency 24/7 – BBC Two, 9pm

A quieter episode than some, but no less sharp for it. One thread follows a disagreement among medics over how to treat a man thrown from his bike while racing motocross, which turns into a useful lesson about leadership under pressure. Elsewhere, a surgeon carries out delicate micro-surgery on a man whose fingers were nearly severed by a buzz saw, admitting afterwards it’s “really not fun at all.”

The Royals: Time to Go? – Channel 4, 9pm

John Humphrys, a republican since his working-class Cardiff childhood, makes the case for scrapping the monarchy altogether in favour of an elected head of state. He leans on the royal finances and the fallout from Andrew’s disgrace, and cites polling that suggests support for his position is growing, especially among younger viewers. Whatever your own view, he’s too experienced a broadcaster to soften it for anyone.
