Lost Home Movies of Nazi Germany – BBC Four, 9pm

A repeat, built entirely from amateur footage shot by ordinary Germans, tracing how enthusiasm for Hitler’s vision curdled into something nobody who filmed it in the early years could have predicted. Effective precisely because it avoids narration doing the emotional work for you.

The documentary shows Liam and others physically obstructing work crews sent to prepare the site, and captures a tense moment where the group confronts a group of men in the street, wrongly assuming them to be asylum seekers — they are in fact Christian refugees from Iran. The row splits Crowborough down the middle: even a pro-immigration stall selling cakes to mark Valentine’s Day is forced off the pavement amid heated arguments. This is observational film-making rather than campaigning journalism, and it sits with the discomfort of what it records rather than resolving it either way. Contains scenes some viewers may find distressing.

Andrew Davies Remembers… Middlemarch – BBC Four, 10pm
