Early Evening
The Northumbria Mysteries – BBC One, 2pm
The Northumbria Mysteries is on BBC One at 2pm. It’s the daytime crime drama with Charlotte Jordan and Robson Green, and this episode sends Joe into a death at a workplace on a country estate. The first four episodes are on iPlayer already.
House of Games – BBC Two, 6pm
House of Games is on BBC Two at 6pm, and it’s the final round of the week. Michael Sheen hosts, with Maisie Adam, Ade Edmondson, Rickie Haywood-Williams and Sammi Kinghorn still playing. Strictly: It Takes Two follows at 6.30pm.
Our Great Yorkshire Life – Channel 5, 7pm
Our Great Yorkshire Life is on Channel 5 at 7pm. Rob and Dave Nicholson take their wives for a day out on the North York Moors Railway. Gentle stuff, and it knows it.
Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing – Dave, 7pm
Dave has Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing at 7pm, this time on the River Trent with Tony Blackburn along for the day. Would I Lie to You? follows at 7.40pm and 8.20pm.
Unreported World – Channel 4, 7.30pm
Unreported World is on Channel 4 at 7.30pm. Darshna Soni reports from Johannesburg on the hitmen who are paid to silence whistleblowers in South Africa. This is the programme’s 51st series. Easily the heaviest half hour before 8pm.
Naturewatch – BBC Two, 7.30pm
Naturewatch is a new wildlife series on BBC Two at 7.30pm, with Chris Packham, Kyle Thomas and Megan McCubbin. Tonight covers where the acorns go and Britain’s smallest bird. Half an hour, and it’s on iPlayer.
Prime Time
Return to Paradise – BBC One, 7.30pm ⭐
Return to Paradise is back on BBC One at 7.30pm, with a second new episode at 8.30pm. If you only watch one thing tonight, make it this. Anna Samson is Mackenzie Clarke, Jacob Collins-Levy is Leo Drake and Kerry Armstrong is Jillian, and the whole new series is on iPlayer from today.
The first case has Mack looking into the death of an artist during a performance at an art fair. The second is about a builder who falls from a site roof. I like it more than most spin-offs. You don’t need to have watched the parent show, because each episode is a self-contained murder that happens to be set in the sun.
Two episodes in a row is a decent way to start a Friday, and it takes you straight to Have I Got News for You at 9.25pm. If you’d rather save it, the boxset is waiting.
Ireland v Argentina – ITV1, 8.10pm
Ireland v Argentina in the Rugby Union Nations Championship is on ITV1, with coverage from 7.15pm and kick-off at 8.10pm from the Aviva Stadium. Mark Pougatch presents. That’s most of what’s on ITV tonight, and more fixtures are on our rugby on TV page.
Neither Emmerdale nor Coronation Street appears in the ITV1 listings we found for tonight, which run rugby from 7.15pm, and ITV News at Ten moves back to 10.30pm. Check ITV’s own schedule before you rely on that. Classic Coronation Street is on ITV3 at 5.15pm if you’re desperate.
Gardeners’ World – BBC Two, 8pm
Gardeners’ World is on BBC Two at 8pm, and it’s Monty Don’s last regular episode as presenter. He took over in 2003, so that’s 23 years, and a couple of winter specials are still to come. Tonight he’s at Longmeadow, Carol Klein looks at new growth, and Joe Swift calls in on a garden designed by Ann-Marie Powell. It’s on iPlayer afterwards.
George Clarke’s Building Home – Channel 4, 8pm
George Clarke’s Building Home is on Channel 4 at 8pm, this week on Anglesey. Good for anyone who watches home builds with a calculator open on their phone.
Egypt with Dan Snow – Channel 5, 8pm
Egypt with Dan Snow reaches the final episode on Channel 5 at 8pm, set in Cairo. He’s back at 9pm with another series.
Gogglebox – Channel 4, 9pm
Gogglebox is on Channel 4 at 9pm, a new episode. The families watch the week’s television so you don’t have to, and they’re usually ruder about it than you’d be.
The Odyssey with Dan Snow – Channel 5, 9pm
The Odyssey with Dan Snow is on Channel 5 at 9pm, running to 10.30pm. Snow follows the route of Homer’s hero around Greek sites, which is a good excuse for some scenery. It’s already on 5’s streaming service.
Who Do You Think You Are? – BBC Two, 9pm
Who Do You Think You Are? is on BBC Two at 9pm, and Monty Don’s name is on this one too. The listing points to a Nottingham parish and the Keiller marmalade family. Two Monty Don programmes in one night is a lot of tweed.
Django Unchained – Film4, 9pm
Film4 has Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained (2012) at 9pm, with Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz. It runs until about 12.20am, so you’ll want snacks. Every other film tonight is on our films on TV page. The Comancheros is on before it at 6.40pm.
War – Sky Atlantic, 9pm
War is on Sky Atlantic at 9pm. It’s a drama set inside a law firm, where suspicion builds ahead of a court case. An earlier showing went out at 2am on Friday morning.
Have I Got News for You – BBC One, 9.25pm
Have I Got News for You is on BBC One at 9.25pm. Steph McGovern hosts, with Helen Lewis as guest and Ian Hislop and Paul Merton on the teams.
Lena Martell: In Concert – BBC Four, 9.55pm
BBC Four has Lena Martell: In Concert at 9.55pm, filmed at Callendar Park in Falkirk. It arrives after the singer’s recent death, so expect it to feel like a tribute. The channel has Top of the Pops repeats from 7pm.
Late Night
Planes, Trains and Automobiles – BBC Two, 10pm
BBC Two shows Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987) at 10pm, with Steve Martin and John Candy. It runs to 11.30pm. A road comedy that stands up better than most of its age. Their Finest follows at 11.30pm.
The Last Leg – Channel 4, 10pm
The Last Leg is on Channel 4 at 10pm. Desiree Burch, Harry Shearer and Ed Miliband are the guests, with Adam Hills, Josh Widdicombe and Alex Brooker hosting.
The Graham Norton Show – BBC One, 10.40pm
The Graham Norton Show is on BBC One at 10.40pm with Judi Dench, Alan Cumming and Nicola Coughlan, and music from James Blunt. Dench on a chat-show sofa is rarely dull. RuPaul’s Drag Race UK follows at 11.30pm.
Leonard Cohen: Songs from a Life – BBC Four, 10.45pm
Leonard Cohen: Songs from a Life is on BBC Four at 10.45pm, a 1988 profile of the singer-songwriter. It’s ten years since his death, so the timing’s right. Singer-Songwriters at the BBC follows at 11.55pm and 12.55am.
RuPaul’s Drag Race UK – BBC One, 11.30pm
The grand finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK is on BBC One at 11.30pm, with Michelle Visage, Alan Carr and Graham Norton at the judging table. Late, but it’s the one to stay up for.

Final Verdict
Start with Return to Paradise on BBC One, then decide between the rugby on ITV1 and Monty Don’s last regular Gardeners’ World on BBC Two. They kick off close together, so one of them is going on catch-up.
After that, Gogglebox and The Last Leg make a neat pair on Channel 4, and Norton is the safe place to finish unless you’re staying up for the Drag Race finale.
