Quick Picks: Tonight’s Best

  • This City Is Ours BBC One, 9pm. Episode four of eight (series two).
  • Adultery ITV1, 9pm. The affair between Beth and Tom comes under pressure.
  • Escaping Idi Amin BBC Two, 9pm. The final part.
  • Gogglebox E4, 10pm. An older episode, not the current series.
  • Newcastle v Everton Sky Sports Main Event, 8pm kick-off.

Watch: What’s On TV Tonight

Early Evening

The Chase – ITV1, 5pm

The Chase is on ITV1 at 5pm, with Bradley Walsh asking and the Chasers doing the damage. Safest hour of the afternoon. ITV News London is on at 6pm.

House of Games – BBC Two, 6pm

House of Games is on BBC Two at 6pm, and this week’s players are Maisie Adam, Ade Edmondson, Rickie Haywood-Williams and Sammi Kinghorn. Daft, gentle, a decent way into the evening. Strictly: It Takes Two follows at 6.30pm, with Ellie Taylor and a look at the latest couple to go out.

The Adjustment Bureau – Film4, 6.55pm

Film4 has The Adjustment Bureau at 6.55pm, the 2011 romance with Matt Damon as an ambitious politician and Emily Blunt as the dancer he keeps bumping into. Some men in hats would rather he didn’t. It’s a bit silly and quite sweet, and it’s over by 9pm.

Hollyoaks – E4, 7pm

Hollyoaks is on E4 at 7pm, a new episode. Leah is keen to get close to Imran again without knowing what he’s keeping from her, Abigail is rattled by an accusation, and a mum tries to get her son talking. Usual half hour, then The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air fills the next ninety minutes.

Prime Time

EastEnders – BBC One, 7.30pm

EastEnders is on BBC One at 7.30pm for its usual half hour, as it is every Monday to Thursday. The listing points to trouble in the Branning house and Cindy on the warpath, which is about as much as I’d want to know beforehand.

Cooking with the Stars – ITV1, 7.30pm

Cooking with the Stars is on ITV1 at 7.30pm, fronted by Emma Willis and Tom Allen. Harry Aikines-Aryeetey joins Joey Essex, JB Gill and Caroline Quentin in the kitchen this week. Expect smoke. Catch-up is on ITVX.

Iran: The People’s Story – BBC One, 8pm

Iran: The People’s Story is a Panorama special on BBC One at 8pm, in which Iranians who have lived through the last few years of upheaval tell it in their own words. A serious hour, and I’m glad it’s on the main channel in peak time rather than buried after the news.

Emmerdale – ITV1, 8pm

If you’re asking what time Emmerdale is on tonight, it’s 8pm on ITV1, for half an hour. The listings say Caleb is furious, Robert tries to charm Marlon and Billy gets a surprise. See the Emmerdale page for more.

Jack Dee’s Help Me Tiny Big Brain – Dave, 8pm

Jack Dee’s Help Me Tiny Big Brain is a new series on Dave at 8pm. Children who are very good at problem-solving talk Johnny Vegas, Sophie Willan and Lucy Beaumont through awkward tasks while Jack Dee hosts. Only 40 minutes, then QI at 8.40pm.

University Challenge – BBC Two, 8.30pm

University Challenge is on BBC Two at 8.30pm, a second-round match with Amol Rajan asking the questions. It is the last leg of a BBC Two quiz run: Mastermind at 7.30pm and Only Connect at 8pm come first.

Coronation Street – ITV1, 8.30pm

Coronation Street is on ITV1 at 8.30pm. Gary and Summer are worried about Marco, and Idris turns up at Carla’s business meeting, according to the listings. More on our Coronation Street page.

This City Is Ours – BBC One, 9pm ⭐

This City Is Ours on BBC One at 9pm is the one I’d put first tonight. Series two reaches episode four of eight (episode three was on Sunday night), and things are going badly for Michael. He’s trying to keep hold of the business while Ozzie pulls Freddie somewhere a lot darker.

If you’ve been watching weekly, you’ll want this live. If you haven’t started, the series is on iPlayer, so go back to episode one first. I wouldn’t jump in at the halfway point: it’s a slow-burn drama, more about who’s loyal to whom than about set pieces, and you’d miss most of what matters. BBC News follows at 10pm.

Adultery – ITV1, 9pm

Adultery runs on ITV1 at 9pm tonight, episode four of six, with the series on ITVX. Beth is struggling as she stands by Neil through his trial, and Tom is eaten up with guilt. Romola Garai and Dominic Cooper lead the cast. If you can only record one 9pm drama I’d pick the BBC one, but this runs it close.

Escaping Idi Amin – BBC Two, 9pm

Escaping Idi Amin ends on BBC Two at 9pm, the second of two parts on the 1972 expulsion of Ugandan Asians. People who left, many as children, tell it themselves. Both parts are on iPlayer. Of the three 9pm choices it’s the quietest, and probably the one that stays with you longest.

Pierre – Channel 4, 9pm

Pierre is on Channel 4 at 9pm, episode five of six of the legal drama with David Harewood in the title role. He leaves hospital under orders to avoid stress, then gets a tip-off he can’t leave alone. The first four are on Channel 4’s streaming service if you need to catch up.

Murder: Suspect No.1 – Channel 5, 9pm

Murder: Suspect No.1 has a new episode on Channel 5 at 9pm. A man on the M40 hard shoulder confesses to murder, and officers then find a woman dead at a house in Havant. Grim stuff, and Channel 5 does this sort of thing reliably. Twisted Sisters follows at 10pm.

The Gilded Age – Sky Atlantic, 9pm

Series four of the New York period drama is on Sky Atlantic at 9pm, with Cynthia Nixon, Christine Baranski, Denée Benton and Carrie Coon. Now has it for catch-up. Crystal Lake follows at 10pm.

Under Siege 2: Dark Territory – ITV4, 9pm

ITV4 has Under Siege 2: Dark Territory at 9pm, the 1995 Steven Seagal sequel that takes the “Die Hard on a ship” idea and puts it on a train. Katherine Heigl is in it. Long one: it runs to 11.05pm with a short break.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes – Film4, 9pm

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is Film4’s 9pm film, the 2011 reboot with James Franco and Andy Serkis. Serkis does the motion-capture work as Caesar, and he’s the reason it still works. It ends at 11.05pm, with Nope straight after.

Late Night

Trauma: My Broken Brain – Channel 4, 10pm

Trauma: My Broken Brain finishes on Channel 4 at 10pm. This last part follows young stroke survivors including Dan, who faces surgery for a hole in his skull, and Saskia. Hard to watch in places. The Taliban’s War on Women: Dispatches is on at 11pm.

Gogglebox – E4, 10pm

Gogglebox is on E4 at 10pm, not Channel 4, and it’s an episode from an earlier series rather than the current run, which Channel 4 showed on Friday. It runs just over an hour and is repeated at 1.05am.

Live at the Apollo – BBC Two, 10pm

Live at the Apollo is on BBC Two at 10pm, the last show of the series, with Tim Renkow hosting and Janine Harouni and Stuart Goldsmith on the bill. Half an hour, then Newsnight at 10.30pm.

Have I Got News for You – BBC One, 10.40pm

Have I Got News for You is on BBC One at 10.40pm, but it’s a repeat: episode five of ten, already shown on Friday 30 October. Victoria Coren Mitchell hosts, with Julian Clary and Ava Santina Evans. Fine if you missed it.

The Traitors Ireland – BBC One, 11.10pm

The Traitors Ireland is listed on BBC One at 11.10pm, episode one of twelve, with Siobhán McSweeney hosting at Slane Castle. Episode two follows at midnight. If it looks familiar, that’s because episodes one and two were on BBC Three on Friday night.

Elsewhere on the Freeview TV guide tonight: ITV2 has Big Brother at 9pm, ITV3 has Midsomer Murders at 8pm, BBC Four has The Story of Scottish Art at 8pm, BBC Three has Top Gear at 8pm, Drama has The Brokenwood Mysteries at 8pm, 5USA has Wild Cards at 9pm and Legend has Into the Sun at 9pm.

Sport

Nothing live on the free-to-air channels tonight. The main game is Newcastle United v Everton on Monday Night Football: coverage starts at 6.30pm on Sky Sports Main Event and Premier League, with kick-off at 8pm. See Premier League on TV and football on TV today. TNT Sports 1 has Atalanta v Parma in Serie A from 7.30pm.

Late on, Cleveland v Oklahoma City is the basketball at 11.30pm, and the NFL has Seattle Seahawks v Chicago Bears at 1am on Tuesday; see NFL on TV. The rest is in sport on TV today, the Sky Sports TV guide and the TNT Sports TV guide.

TV Radar Team is the byline on TV Radar's automatically generated TV guides — covering BBC One, BBC Two, ITV1, Channel 4, Channel 5 and beyond. Each evening's schedule is built from the published listings (titles, start times, run lengths and episode numbers) and checked against our listings data before publication, so you can decide in two minutes what to record and what to skip. These guides are generated automatically rather than written by hand; a human editor spot-checks them, but not every page is read before it goes live. Based in London, updated every day.
